Housing Offers: How Long Do I Have to Accept?

I’m an admitted Fall 2012 transfer student and have applied to both the co-op system and the dorms at Berkeley. I would prefer the co-ops and am using the dorms as a plan B (since those are actually guaranteed for me), but from the looks of it Berkeley will be getting back to me with housing offers before the co-op system does (maybe by a month or so).

I feel incredibly selfish for these considerations, but how long will I be able to wait to either accept or deny my housing offer for the dorms? I assume not very long, but I have not read any specific time frames anywhere and I am curious as to how far I can push it. I am sure there will be a deadline when my offer does come, but I am feeling a bit impatient.

Thanks!

P.S. Is it possible to get a lease in a dorm for only one semester (or less)? If so, what are the consequences? My top choices were in Wada, Channing-Bodwitch and Foothill. If I am not fortunate enough to get a room in a co-op in time for the Fall, I’d like to think I’d have the opportunity to move in before an entire year has gone by.
