My daughter will be attending Cornell as a sophomore transfer student this fall 2018 and just got this reply about housing
I am a worried mother from CA and would love to hear any tip or advice to search for a safe place for her.
“We congratulate you on your acceptance to Cornell! We have an unusually large incoming class of transfer students this year, and as a result we are experiencing an overwhelming demand for on-campus housing.
Please know that we have assigned as many transfers students housing as we have available at this time. We will certainly do our best to offer you on-campus housing if we are able based on availability over the next four weeks. Availability could mean a space within temporary housing in a quintuple in a first year residence hall on North Campus, and space will be limited. If you are assigned to a temporary space, we would continue to work to find you a permanent space on campus through the coming months as spaces across campus become available.
We do recommend that you also pursue off-campus housing options at this time. Our Off-Campus Living website will be a useful tool in helping with your search https://ccengagement.cornell.edu/off-campus-living as there is a rental listing available to get you started with your search.”
OP - I would encourage you to call the director of housing over the summer. My older daughter was one of those WL students who got housing assignment later than other students. I called housing directly and very nicely ask the then director to help out (I think she has retired) and my kid was able to get a single. Same for my younger daughter when she didn’t like her housing assignment.
As far as off campus housing, there are some very nice apartments in Collegetown (I wouldn’t rent outside of it). They are within walking distance of the campus. Unfortunately most of them are rented out a year ago. What your kid can do is to look for sublets. Many students sublet their apartments when they study abroad and often time they would sublet them below market prices. My older daughter was able to live at many luxury apartments through sublet. Your kid may be able to sublet for one semester and then move on campus later on.
Feel free to PM or post here if you have any questions about a particular apartment unit.
We received the exact same email. I called and they said to wait another week or two to sort it out. Then they will know if anything temporarily can be accommodated at the North (1st year) campus…
Thank you for your comments! I feel relieved to find a shared apartment for my daughter in College Town. We didn’t want to take the risk to wait until end of July for the temporary housing.
Hi Toyava. I would like to know how you went about finding housing in College TowI am in the same situation for my sophomore transfer son.
