Thanks junshik! I assume that you live off campus. How’s the off-campus experience? Am I missing out on much of the “college experience”? Pros and cons please!

Yes I live off-campus.

The situation will be different for you since you’re beginning off-campus as a freshman.
I dormed my freshman year.

That said, the “college experience” is subjective upon the person. The only thing you’ll be missing out on is the DORM experience, and the perks that come with it.

Pros of living off-campus:
- cheap

Cons
- Distance
- Hassle to go to classes, riding the shuttle, etc.
- No access to dorm food (unless you make freshman friends)
- Harder to make friends

It all depends on you. It seems like costs are the constraint here. So you’ll just have to make due.

Especially if you live in park-west, the fact that it takes 30 min. to get to campus, and another 30 min. to return home, factor in the waiting for the shuttle time, you’re losing over an hour just for transportation, and especially as a freshman, it will be tough on you. (This is if you don’t have a car)

I didn’t read through the whole thread, but what are the housing optiosn for incoming transfer students?

Thanks junshik! Well it seems to me that my mom loves your idea of going to Park West and wants my sister and I to share an apartment there. Here’s my idea of solving the cons on your list:

1) distance + hassle to go to classes, riding the shuttle, etc.-> we’ll manage with the shuttle somehow (we’ll wake up earlier lol). We also have a car too but want to refrain from using it.
2) no access to dorm food-> we’re going to learn how to cook and we have incoming freshmen friends that are dorming.
3) harder to make friends-> we have incoming freshmen friends from hs and we’ll make friends in clubs as well.

What do you think? :D

mysterious, I’m glad that you are already in discussion with your family regarding this.

Here’s another thing to consider… if you two are going to share an apartment, you guys can afford paying the $1600~ rent? Or, are you saying you are to share a room with your sister and shack up with 2 other roommates to live in the other room?

Otherwise, sounds good to me.

What am I supposed to do now that I was 10 minutes late in submitting the housing application?
So am I forced to live off campus as a freshman?
I understand that it says I’m not guaranteed a spot, but what am I supposed to do now? Is there like a waitlist?

Well junshik, my parents actually decided instead that my sister and I will get a 1 bedroom apartment. My parent’s are visiting Park West on Friday! :)

puffpuff, I wouldn’t worry. You aren’t “guaranteed” a spot in the dorms, but there should be room. Worst comes to worst, you’ll be relocated to Camino Del Sol, which actually have nicer rooms, but you’ll be farther from campus (ride shuttle) and it might be more expensive.

@mysterious, good choice! How much are the 1 bedroom’s running for?

Suprisingly, the price varies so they’ll let us know when they find a room available for us.
But in the website, it says that the prices ranges from $1,390 to $1,450.

so i just got this e-mail that said that since they had a large amount of freshmen this year at uc irvine they were considering other housing options for freshmen such as arroyo vista and camino del sol. do you think it is better to live in the resident hall as a freshmen than the on campus housings? i was starting to consider camino del sol because it looks nice and has more privacy. does anyone know anything about the camino del sol? thanks!

hey guys i was just wondering how the single sex gender suites are at ME (single sex in the hallway but in a coed dorm) – are there a lot of these dorms or are most coed and/or women’s hall? thanks.

Most of the suites(hallways) are single gender simply because there is only 1 bathroom in most suites. In a some halls, however, some suites are co-ed and have 2 restrooms. Either way it should hardly make a difference. Even if you live in a single gender suite the other gender is maybe only a few feet away down the hall in the next suite.
