Depends on the NBA team. For example, OKC, Toronto, Portland and GSW fans are rabid. Other NBA teams have rabid fan bases.
@sushiritto I agree the transfer may work out for him and his professional chances however, depending on the injury to the new starter he would have been right back in this past weekend and for the foreseeable future (I admit I don’t follow Clemson closely and don’t know if the new QB will miss any more time). If Clemson is as good as they seem to be and could be contending for a national championship quitting a third of the way into the season is shortsighted if he had a chance to get back in and possibly be drafted this year. He could have rode the bench, maybe won his spot back (through work or injury) and announced his transfer decision at the end of the season. Best of both worlds in my mind.
The transfer/release rules have changed. Kelly Bryant won’t lose a season of his college eligiblity, if he choses to redshirt after playing no more than 4 games this season. He’s played in at least a couple so far. He’s not “quitting,” he’s choosing to redshirt (and ask for his release) this season, which is common, and then transfer to another school. Bryant is 16-2 as a starter. Trevor Lawrence, the new freshman QB sensation, is expected to play this week after hurting his shoulder last week against Syracuse.
If I’m Kelly Bryant, expecting to win back the job or get the job back via injury is a low probability proposition. The fact of the matter is that these top teams, Alabama, Georgia, ND, PSU, OSU, Clemson, etc., have very capable O-lines and protection rules are such that QB’s getting hurt aren’t high probability occurences anymore.
You just can’t showcase your talents to the NFL, if you’re sitting on a bench. From what I understand, the new QB, Trevor Lawrence, is the better QB. So Bryant should move on to another school, IMO.
I agree he will probably be in a better situation with a transfer, provided a top program is in need next year, I just disagree with his choice in timing. There was no benefit to quitting the team a couple of games into the season when there is so much unknown about how the season will unfold and he will be in no different position today than he would be in January.
My point was more about there is not much more loyalty to a school/team in big time college than there is in the NFL. The revised transfer rules have made that more apparent. I can say with certainty that every freshman at a power 5 school is looking to the NFL, regardless of what the actual numbers say their chances are. If they see an opportunity to increase those odds the name on the jersey doesn’t matter they will jump ship just like the NFL free agent jumps for the money. Same coin, different sides.
@iaparent: “There was no benefit to quitting the team a couple of games into the season when there is so much unknown about how the season will unfold and he will be in no different position today than he would be in January.”
There was a huge benefit. Bryant is a senior. If he doesn’t play a 5th game, he has 1 more year of eligibility left. If he stays until January, he wouldn’t be able to play anywhere else.
And sure, you could argue that there’s no loyalty by a player to a school, if by loyalty, you mean sacrificing your future for a school (then there’s no loyalty of any employee to a company or any student to their school or vice versa either). But most football players have a love for their alma mater that they don’t have for their NFL team. Just ask them.
ChoatieMom I hear you. With DD now at the Academy the sitting in the rain/sleet snow is not just fun it is REQUIRED! Hopefully she will enjoy it. Go Navy Beat Army!
Clarification. Assuming Bryant did compete 4 years in college, under NCAA rules, he could be eligible to play a 5th year in college, if he could/would complete his bachelors degree and enroll as a graduate student. There are some exceptions, like missions, injuries, college scandals, etc., but you can compete 5 years in college/graduate school.
Again, Bryant isn’t “quitting,” he made a career/financial decision that may be worth millions of $$$.
BTW, there are at least a dozen schools outlined in this article who might have a need for Kelly Bryant next year:
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/9/27/17906326/kelly-bryant-transfer-teams-clemson
And there’s always the possibility that Dabo Sweeny leaves Clemson and takes Nick Saban’s job at Alabama, id Saban retires, which has been rumored for years. Kelly Bryant doesn’t owe his loyalty to Clemson. They may have made promises that weren’t kept, we just don’t know.
I’m loyal to the point I’ll watch or record the game each week and watch it mostly at home in the ac with snacks, but I’ve also been in a sports bar. In the SEC your issue is more than broiling heat. We go to a game or two each year, generally in the later fall, I’m not that devoted I wanted to sit in a 100 degree stadium. In fact I don’t know how the players manage in the heat like that.
The new red shirt rule is bringing in some unintended consequences, imo. I haven’t heard how injured the QB is from Clemson, but it made me wonder if the other guy had any pangs about leaving.
I just saw an interview from Kerryon Johnson. They asked him his most memorable moment - at the Iron Bowl last year he was injured on the ground and the entire crowd started chanting his name. He was loved and admired by all. I’m sure that is not the case in the NFL, even if I’m pretty sure he calculated where to go to college to move on to pro ball.
@sushiritto, actually, you only get 4 years of eligibility even as a graduate transfer.
So a graduate transfer would have had to take a redshirt or graduate early (or both).
BTW, Bryant already has his undergraduate degree from Clemson.
Yes, you’re correct, my apologies. In my head, I was thinking you have a 5-year time period in which to compete (with exceptions for missions, etc.). But as you pointed out, you can only actually play for 4 years, assuming you don’t use any of the exceptions.
But you can potentially play 4 full years plus 4 games of a 5th year (athough not the last year).
The Browns WON!!
I live almost in Charlotte, but did anyone else (OK, I guess some NY Giants fans were watching) catch the end of that game today? I am a very reserved person by nature, but my neighbors must have heard my scream when that 63 yard field goal went through to win the game!!
I saw the end of that game @NJres . We were at a party watching some channel…red something or another on Fox…that jumps from game to game to game.
That field goal and the Cleveland one made it…but there were a bunch of missed ones too.
All that hopping around from game to game was nuts…but I got to see the Browns win,!
@NJres We were watching! I told my husband he would make it; hubby said “No way - it’s 63 yards”. I said watch…what a way to lose!!!
But Goooooooooooo Irish!!! College ball has become my favorite in the last few years, but we still watch both. Life long Irish fan, even if I can’t get either of my kids to apply!
Frustrated 49er fan. FIVE TURNOVERS! Against the AZ Cardinals? 8-|
I root for 2 college football teams. GO IRISH! and GO BLUE!
ESPN’s game day will be in Ann Arbor this Saturday for the Whisky-UMich game.
Texas/OU was a pretty exciting game. OU comeback was amazing, but just a little too late.
@Nrdsb4, my parents were at the game. My dad actually said maybe he’s getting too old (81) for that much excitement! He is such a huge fan that I worry he’s going to have a heart attack because of the Longhorns one of these days!
Yay for Drew Brees!! He went to my high school, so I have followed his career. It was so cool seeing him hug his kids after he broke the all-time NFL record for passing yards last night.
Did anyone see the Texas A&M v. LSU game last night? It had 7 overtimes! OMG! My son had to be up at 5AM today for an early flight, but we couldn’t tear ourselves away from the game.
I believe the Pats are heading the AFC East and in the top five NFL teams as of today. The team is definately not on solid footing and aren’t playing to their potential. It’ll be interesting to see how we fare this second half of the season. Last weeks’ game was really hard to watch, today against the Jets was fun and the win was expected. GO PATS!
