How accepting is SMU of minorities?

I’m from New Orleans Louisiana and I am an African American female… I read a LOT about how SMU is full of extremely rich white people andmillionaire republicans who are not really accepting of minorities… However I do want to study business and this is a really good place to get a good paying job when you graduate cause it is Dallas of course… But idk If I want to go through 4 years of being treated differently and not being acknowledged at a school with a huge majority of whites. Soooo anyone a minority attending SMU? Or just have any experience to share in general with the school and it’s diversity attitudes… Thanks

I do not attend SMU, but I can assure you it will not make a difference unless you yourself separate youself. I’m Hispanic & I heard similar things about Texas Tech. “The rednecks up there don’t like Mexicans.” Well, I have not had any problems with them anyone white, black, or Asian. I DO hear about people who simply attend a university and form cliques with their own type, say Asians hanging out together, Mexicans/Hispanics hanging out together etc It’s almost like you are in a diverse environment & refuse to engage with those are not of your background. I would say if you believe SMU is a great place to get a good paying job go for it!! Don’t let what you hear deter YOU from seeking & achieving your dreams.
I had a professor at my former college who worked at a law firm in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and he said when they received job applications the SMU students were put in a different category than the others, that included Ivy Leaguer’s. That’s quite a reputation to have in Texas. If anything if you are a minority & you excel chances are you’ll have $$$ thrown your way for diversity problems. I would encourage you that if you have the opportunity to attend there you take it. Look ahead, not behind.
