How accurate is the book "Guyland" what percentage of young men does it apply to?

I want to guess what my chances are of finding a boyfriend who was never part of that subculture.

Can you talk a bit about what you got from Guyland, and why you want to find a boyfriend who was never part of that subculture?

I’ve only read reviews of it, but it basically seems like the guys described spend their college time getting drunk or high in the party scene, denigrate women, and are afraid of growing up and settling down. Basically they want to act like the stereotypical frat boy for as long as possible, and avoid responsibility. I want someone who was never like that because it would mean that we both highly value responsibility and maturity, and are resistant to peer pressure. Those values are important to me.

I have a very mixed relationship with Kimmel’s work. Some of it is brilliant and some of it is terrible. Manhood in America? Awesome. Guyland? Terrible.

IMO, Guyland is definitely representative of a subset of males but certainly not all of them. You will absolutely be able to find guys who don’t fit that stereotype.

Thanks!

Yeah, I would guesstimate that can be anywhere from 5% to at most maybe 20% of a school’s guys. So, at worst, 4 in 5 guys won’t be like that. Though, where and who you hang out with drastically lowers/raise those chances. Chances are if you’re trying to avoid it, it will be much less than 20%.

I guess it doesn’t help that I go to a big party school. But I’ll be graduating soon, and I’m not planning on dating until after that.

I met my husband at a big party school, and today is our 29th wedding anniversary. He was the opposite of the type of guy you’re describing!

@Roadtripgirl Four years of no dating?

Congratulations!

Four years of too much homework and not enough social skills.

There may only be a minority of men who fit the “guyland” mold, but the problem is that they have a knack for contaminating the other men around them to varying degrees.

roadtrip, are you in high school or college?

I met my fiance that I’m marrying on Saturday in college at our big party school. He is NOTHING like what is described in Guyland.

College.
And congratulations!
