Of the prompts available, I was wondering if using a Past GF’s experience in them would be beneficial? Not actually about the relationship, just a revelation I discovered during one. Basically, found something I never want to grow up to be, something that motivated me to become something in the future. My Past GF / family were fine with the situation, though I detested their position.

Sorry if this is too vague, I can explain in more detail in PM if needed.

Prompt C : Considering your lifetime goals, discuss how your current and future academic and extra-curricular activities might help you achieve your goals.

Prompt A : Describe a setting in which you have collaborated or interacted with people whose experiences and/or beliefs differ from yours. Address your initial feelings and how those feelings were or were not changed by this experience.

The other two prompts don’t seem at all applicable, <a href=“Essays & Short Answers - University of Texas Admissions”>http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/admission/essays

Sounds hawt.

In reality, I guess it would be a really personal prompt, but a rather risky one.
If you manage to work it out so that the AO saw you as a very gregarious and extroverted person, then it’s all in your favor. The risk is that you’ll end up sounding whiny and crummy.

Haha, this is not where im getting at, she and her parents were totally fine with living a lifestyle where they went to work, came home, watched TV, ate slept, and that’s what they did every day besides caring for their daughter (my ex GF).

This inspired me to want to do something in life? Somethine along these lines, of course with better vocabulary, etc etc.

Seriously you are going to have an ex girlfriend as your topic? Be very careful you aren’t bashing someone else in your essay. That would be very unattractive. This sounds like of like it could veer on the condescending side.

But here they’re not using the gf as a romantic type of essay. Just her family, he’s not describing their first kiss or anything. The same, in this context, as referencing a friend’s family.

While the essay could be good and I don’t think it’s too risky, I’m not sure that’s exactly what the prompt is asking for. Just me though.

@nova : I was more leaning towards the second prompt (Prompt A), the beliefs being their lifestyle and my desire for something less repetitive / monotonous clashing?

@brownparent : Past/Ex seems to give negative connotation, thanks for pointing that out

It doesn’t even sound like OP’s talking about the ex so much as her parents…which still sounds very juvenile, as an idea. “I saw how lazy these people were and thought, ‘I’m going to be better than them!’” doesn’t put you in a very good light.

@bodangles : I was thinking maybe more of lack of initiative, motivation, or drive? Something like that. Though I see what you’re getting at. Maybe change the approach of my beliefs clashing, or should I just scrap this idea? Still a Junior got some time left.

I guess the problem here is that it seems like you are kind of looking down upon them for their differences rather than learning about differences and growing as a person. While I totally get what you mean and understand that being active and that lifestyle is really admirable, I feel like in an essay it might come across more as you just judging people. Again, good concept in theory (saying you want to be an active participant in life, live life to the fullest, you’d be an asset to their college etc.) it just might not come across well

I see, thank you for your insight. Now need to find a way to use this impartially, without condescending upon the parents, and to clearly say that I grew from the experience, will brainstorm this over the following days, thanks again!
