How are AP teachers qualified to teach AP?

I’m taking AP French and it’s completely obvious that she has no idea what she’s doing.
Last year 10 people out of 60 students took the risk of taking the exam and only 3 passed, one because she speaks fluent French and the other 2 because they self-studied and took private lessons.
This isn’t right. We are currently learning the class as a regular level pace, and we are not going nearly fast enough to even consider taking the exam. (It’s $87, I’m not coughing up that much if I know I’m going to fail)

Uh, I don
t think they really have to qualify for anything (someone correct me if I
m wrong). They just have to be willing to teach it, and be willing to put the extra time into all of it and whatnot.

Really? That’s horrible.
Sorry, by she, I mean my French teacher. A relatively lax teacher by all accounts. Her class is easy, and she’s a nice enough person, but I can’t say that I’ve been learning French for four years because the curriculum we’ve been covering isn’t nearly sufficient for even two years.
(We only just learned how to write conditional phrases and use reflexive verbs, and it’s fourth year…AP, even)

My AP World teacher is the complete opposite. She`s a great teacher, and is pretty much MEANT to teach AP.

The rest of my AP teachers are great…it’s just this one class.
We don’t even have AP World History in our school. o_o

Haha you think thats bad. Our AP Euro teacher said that the goal of the course is to score a 2 on the AP exam. Last year 70 people took the test, and 7 passed (six 3’s and one 4.)

Nobody cares enough to fire the teacher.

Duh.

^Replace AP Euro with APUSH and you have my teacher.

My IB teachers are supposed to have training…I don’t think a single one has. District’s too cheap to send them.

Wow. :frowning:
I guess I’ll have to self study then. I wish we didn’t have to worry about whether or not we had a good teacher.

At least at my school all the AP teachers have already taught the subject that they are now teaching in AP as an honors class (except for APUSH, she is an ex-civics teacher), so they usually do fairly well/students get high scores (last year 1/10th of the students that took the AP lang exam got a 5, I think around 1/2 got a 3 or higher).

You just send in a syllbus and get it approved.

Heck i sent in a self study for government and got it approved

At my old high school the qualifications for the AP teachers were the same as those for the regular ones: just have at least a bachelor’s degree and a teaching credential. All of my teachers were very knowledgeable and majored in the respective subjects except for one so I never really had problems.

My son’s AP Econ teacher told them he did not like the subject. He picked on my son for being interested in the subject. My son was the only one to pass because he self studied.
