How are my chances looking for MIT EA?

<p>Supplements:
It initially started out as a joke, but I ended up submitting a Roller Coaster Tycoon ‘portfolio’ consisting of work I’ve done in the game. The intended purpose was to show that it’s not just a video game but also an outlet for creative expression. I tied it into my love for rollercoasters, etc.</p>

<p>Recommendations: should be good but I didnt read
Essays:

  1. Wrote about my passion for rollercoasters and wanting to be an engineer so I can design them
  2. Wrote about my love of playing the violin
  3. Creativity essay was kinda gimmicky, I won’t get into particulars
  4. For the “world you come from” essay, I wrote about culture and how I want to broaden my horizons in college and learn how my cultural heritage fits into my life. Yeah, it wasn’t very specific towards MIT and engineering but oh well
  5. Significant challenge –> not making the all state orchestra. I wrote about how I welcome my next phase as a musician at MIT
  6. Optional essay: I wrote about quitting the youth orchestra I was in because of time constraints. With the free time, I didn’t have to stay up till all hours of the night because I couldnt start homework since I had rehersal. Also wrote about how I had time to try new things. This is the most generic of all of my essays</p>

<p>EA decisions come out in 5 days…what do you think my chances are of getting in? Deferred? Rejected in the first round?</p>

<p>I think you have a great chance almost a match the only weak side on your application is your limited math and science ECs…pretty much my problem too…I would be surprised if you got rejected</p>

Do you even know how crazy strong asian applicants’ resumes are?

but I did read tons of stats of applicants because I too was wishing to apply to MIT but gave up.</p>

<p>eh, I was never really under the impression you needed ECs centered around math and science to get into MIT. Sure, I excel at math and science classes but my passions outside of the classroom are more geared towards. I always thought you just needed to show admissions that you’re passionate about what you do, regardless of what that 'what" is</p>

<p>I used to think that just being passionate about a certain activity was enough to get into a great engineering school. But after being deferred by Caltech I have to say that strong background in science/engineering activities is a must. Not to say that you have to be a Seimens or Intel winner/ science Olympian. But definitely taken advantage and go maybe beyond the science stuff your school offers.</p>

<p>All I see is a passion in music, which is great!, but probably not going to drag you in. You have the test scores and GPA, no one needs to say that to you. But chances don’t look good for EA.</p>

<p>I probably shouldn’t have made this topic since it’s just making me more nervous. From what I’ve heard though, CalTech focuses much more on science/math ECs and awards. I think if you’re deferred from CalTech you still have a great chance at MIT :)</p>

<p>I’ll be sure to let you guys know what my result is, but I’m trying to just not stress it right now.</p>

<p>I mentioned to my interviewer that I’ve done some research at a local university (SUNY) but I was never able to put together a project fo rcompetitions nor did I really have an abstract or anything, so I didn’t put it on my app as I activities more important to me</p>
