Towards the end of the semester your RA will start putting up fliers (or you can ask him/her). Anyway, you take a leadership class of sorts to prepare you for it, then you apply. By the end of the year they’ll let you know if you were selected and for where. Are you at the school already or just planning ahead?

Just wondering about it. Can Sophomores be RAs?

Yeah definitely. I know a couple people who are becoming RAs as sophomores and my RA from this year was an RA his freshman through senior years. Then my RA next year is going to be a sophomore, so we’ll be the same age. So yeah, it’s very possible.

In order to be selected as an RA, you must first take the EDCO 030x class. Freshman can take that course starting second semester freshman year. During that course you will learn more of what the RA job is, and find out if you really want to do it. You will also be evaluated by your instructor on how successful of an RA you would be. You will be told of that evaluation’s results. In early February applications will go out for being an RA. You will fill out that application, which will be reviewed along with the evaluation from EDCO. If you score highly enough on both, you will be invited to interview. The results from the interview, application, and EDCO evaluation are then compiled, and the decision on hiring is made. You find out the results in April. Sophomores can be RAs- we had three on my staff of seven this past year. However, they need to display lots of maturity in the EDCO class to be chosen. You cannot be an RA as a freshman. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

By the way, the process was very competitive last year, so you cannot count on becoming an RA.
