How are student photographers generally treated at colleges and universities?

I’m very interested in becoming a photographer for whatever institution of post-secondary education I attend. I was wondering how they are treated or even if such a position exists for most colleges. I’ve only seen a student-photographer featured on the Yale Facebook page (though I haven’t been casting a wide net in terms of the Facebook pages I stalk).

I’ve heard whisperings that student photographers/student media team interns can get grants/paid to buy nice lenses and gear; what do you know about the position/job?

There are students that work as photographers at the more official school events. They take tons of pictures at things like student organization fairs, career fairs, and various other events and such. How are they treated? Just like any other person I imagine.

As far as getting grants and such goes, that’s going to vary from school to school. Some schools likely have professional camera equipment for the students to use. I think that’s the case at my school.
