How bad does failing a class twice look?

Hey Everyone,

I want to transfer to the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) from Oakland University, and unfortunately, it appears as if I am going to fail a class for the second time this semester. The class is Fundamentals of Physics I. My GPA at Oakland University will still hover around 3.22 despite this, and the other classes I am taking it looks like I am either going to ace or, in the worst case scenario, receive a B. Furthermore, I have attended two community colleges in the past (Oakland Community College and Macomb Community College). Between those two colleges, I have a GPA of around 3.8 or 3.9 (I can’t remember the precise value at the top of my head). My question is how could this repeat failure affect my chances of transferring? I have done well in difficult classes in the past (i.e. Calculus II), but the Physics department at my current University seems to be… troublesome. I’m not sure if it’s just me, or them, but it seems that their teaching principles are a little off par. But I digress.

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to read my post!

It looks really bad. I’m glad your application has other strengths but failing a class twice hurts your chances.

Pretty sure the Umich deadline already passed. Failing twice does look awful, but if you believe other aspects of your application will balance it out, you should go for it next year. In the mean time, you should focus on doing really well this semester

Failing twice gives them no reassurance that you won’t fail again (or fail related courses) at their school. It definitely hurts but I wouldn’t say it would result in an automatic rejection.
