How bad would it be if I terribly misused a word on my application. I’ve already sent it but at least it’s not in my essays. It’s in the part of the common app, not supplement where you can explain any additional information.

It was something about taking classes with the same group of kids since 4th grade, but I wrote the same “contingency” of kids. For some reason I thought “contingency” meant “group”.

I mean it’s just one word, but it’s not even close. It’s like embarrassingly ■■■■■■■■. You think they would actually hold a little mistake like that against me? Or would they just be like “What the…?” and move on with little care?

My D didn’t ask us to review her application, and trying not to be hoverparents, we didn’t push for it. When she was waitlisted at NU, she came to us for help in writing a strong response. At this time she showed me her common AP essay, and there was a similar misuse of a word. To make a long story short, she got in, so I don’t think it mattered.

In your case, there’s nothing you can do about it now, so why worry. On the bright side, it tells the admissions officer that your essay wasn’t finished (or written) by a professional hired hand.
