How bad?

How bad does a D look to the Ivies?

It is a matter of pool comparison. Vast majority who apply to ivies (most of whom themselves get rejected) have mostly A’s and some B’s so having a D means you are not likely to look as good as any of those unless there is something else that is extraordinary in your file

Ok, so like, that’s the thing.

Will they take my app out and throw it away because of that D? Even if my ec’s are greater, probably than most of the pool?

there’s a chance that your ecs would make up for the d and get you considered, but they would have to be really amazing- remember, ivies get thousands of applicants who have super ecs and all a’s, so you have to do something to really stand out.

Your ECs would have to be extremely amazing to make up for a D, as there’s tons of applicants with excellent grades, scores, and ECs.

A D is a pretty nasty blotch on an Ivy application, but if it was in freshman or sophomore year and the rest of your application is extremely strong, you might be able to recover.

Yes I would say that your GPA is EXTREMELY important in admissions. A professor at NYU has been a close friend of my family since I was a child and speaks to me about this all the time. One of the first things they look at IS your GPA a D can hurt that but it depends on your overall GPA not one letter grade. They look at it as a whole. The next thing that is extremely important is not just EC’s but specifically LEADERSHIP positions you may be in a club but if you are not in a leadership you may not shine as brightly compared to all the others applying that have them. I wish you luck.

Thank you everybody. I am an officer for five clubs, I do research. And other things.

Most acceptees to top colleges will have mostly A’s, perhaps a few B’s. A very few will have at least one C. I can’t imagine any unhooked applicants (and even many unhooked applicants) have a D.
