How badly do northern schools want southerners?

I’m talking about LAC’s.

Specifically…Lafayette, St Olaf, DePauw, Illinois Wesleyan.

How much of an advantage is it to be from the south?

Hypothetical example: There are two applicants. One is from the north and one is from the south. Both applicants have equally good grades, rigor, class rank, EC’s, essays, and everything else to an application besides test scores. Let’s say the northerner has a 30 ACT and the southerner has a 27 ACT.

Who would the schools I listed above likely choose if they could only choose one? The southerner or the northerner?

Its not that simple. But yes, southerners have a leg up on the geographical factor, to the extent there is one at any particular school. Better stated, its really you who matters and where you want to go to school and why. Make your applications and see what happens. Some schools have a long history of recruiting/accepting southerners and know how well they adjust and perform. Bucknell is an excellent example. Princeton is rumored to be where southerners historically applied in the Ivy League. Though I think that is not the case anymore.

Look at Hamilton, Holy Cross, Colgate, Fordham, Lafayette, Lehigh, Bucknell, Tufts, Wesleyan, Connecticut College, Bowdoin, Colby, Bates, Rutgers, Middlebury etc.

Well, ok, I knew being from the south is an advantage…usually…but how much of an advantage? That’s the question I would like answered.

Illinois Wesleyan is 58% female. So I’m fairly confident males have an advantage there.

Which is likely to be the greater advantage (for Illinois Wesleyan): being male or being from the south?

…I know it isn’t this simple, but I’m using these examples because it’s really the only way to get a sense of scale.

I saw some statistics saying that something like 90% or more of Illinois Wesleyan students are from the Midwest.

So yeah, I think they would love to have applicants from outside the midwest, for diversity if nothing else, and it seems to me that being from the south would be more of an advantage than being male.

Even though IWU is really really female (58%), you still think being from outside the midwest is a greater advantage?

Alright, cool. lol.

So I have the advantage of being male * 2.5 at IWU.

It will be sad if I get rejected.

“Princeton is rumored to be where southerners historically applied in the Ivy League. Though I think that is not the case anymore.”

Princeton is certainly a principal Ivy for southerners. After all, Princeton’s most famous president was born in Virginia and grew up in Georgia.

How much of an advantage do I have applying to Brown? I come from a village in Louisiana (yes, a village) of about 700 people. Good grades, 31 act, etc.

“How much of an advantage do I have applying to Brown? I come from a village in Louisiana (yes, a village)”

LMAO
