First post, like I said in the title I received a 3.1 GPA my freshman year. As a member of a family who attends very selective college’s I feel ashamed and embarrassed. I wish I had a good excuse, but really I let myself slack off this year and I am only now realizing the consequences. I have been interested in Georgetown University and some similarly selective colleges for a while now (Not Stanford or Harvard selective, but still high on the rankings). Even though I am disappointed in myself for my performance I feel I have learned a lot and am much more committed to school for next year. My question is, how badly will my 3.1 GPA effect me on applications if I significantly improve my GPA (aiming for around a 3.8) for the rest of high school and how can I best position myself to not let these scores ruin my chances?
If you get 3.9 or so for the rest of your high school years it will have minimal effect. But do you have the ability and work ethic to achieve that.
The 3.1 won’t affect you college applications by much if your sophomore, junior, and first semester senior grades are 3.8+. GPA is only one aspect of your college application; there are recs, the essay, SAT/ACT scores, EC’s, etc. Georgetown is definitely doable if other areas of your college application are great so that they can make up for your GPA. Since you mentioned that some family members have attended selective colleges, then you could also look into legacy status because that plays a big part at a lot of top schools.
