How badly will a suspension freshman year affect me for college admissions?

Long story short, I got suspended for 5 days for cyberbullying in ninth grade. I didn’t say anything racist/homophobic/sexist (like a serious cancel-able offense) but I basically insulted people I hated on my private Instagram story (yes, I know, very stupid).

I’ve had a clean record ever since and have a 97/100 GPA, 1570 SAT, strong letters of rec (I specifically asked one teacher that knew me for years who could attest to my personal growth), and solid extracurriculars.

Even if the Common App got rid of the disciplinary record question, most schools I applied to required me to self-report it. How badly will the suspension hurt me? Do you guys know anyone who got into a top school with a suspension?

My guess is it won’t - especially if there’s a place to express contrition and learning. Perhaps your guidance counselor can add context - that would be a best case.

I look back at my life - and all the boneheaded things I’ve done. We all do. So this too shall pass.

Like everyone have a balanced list - ensure you have schools you can get into and afford. With your stats, there’s lots of them and st many budgets.

Good luck.

I know one student (not in my class) who was expelled from a magnet program in 9th grade, finished the year in alternative school, transferred to the high school zoned for their address, grew a lot in the next two years (teachers talk to each other), and is happily attending a T20 university now.
