How can anyone study in a warm coastal climate?

How can anyone ever manage to study in a place like Hawaii, the southern California coast, the Gulf coast, the South Atlantic coast, or anywhere in Florida? The sun and the beach are always beckoning. At least in the North, the colder, darker, more hostile conditions of the outdoors in winter make studying less of a chore. But in a climate where it’s warm for all or most of the year, it must be hard to study. I attended undergraduate school at UIUC and graduate school at George Mason University, and my spring semester GPA was better than my fall semester GPA only in 1 of the 6 school years. In 4 of the 6 school years, my spring semester GPA was worse than my fall semester GPA. It just got harder to concentrate on studying when the warm sunshine and the fresh outdoor air were beckoning.

i’m applying to various schools in the south and i don’t think it will be difficult. the way i see it is that after a while you get used to the warm weather and start taking it for granted, so you don’t want to be outside all the time. up in the north it’s usually colder more than it’s warm, so when it’s warm outside you cherish it more and want to be outside all the time.

I hate the sun. It wouldn’t be that hard for me. I’m a snow kind of person.

patientlywaiting is right…you get used to the weather (at least i have in high school anyway), and beach weather is really only in the summer. since i’ve lived here my whole life, though, i guess other people may respond differently. and i guess i’ve taken the weather for granted as well, because, IMO, i don’t think its all that warm all the time (and i do indeed live in socal). last night it even rained! lol…

I agree with the original poster - i just cant stand it when it gets too hot. I live in Socal and in September and part of October the days were just so hot that i simply could not study. Its now gotten a bit cooler and studying is a lot easier. Weather is probably one of the reasons i decided to go to UCB over UCLA. And its true that in rainy areas its easier to study because, i mean, what else are you going to do when its rainy and cold outside? Your options are limited.

Funny, I get the lower grades when the sun isn’t out. I just get a bit more depressed when there is not a nice day and then I don’t feel like doing anything, especially studying.

you study outside in the sun!
seriously. i do anyway.

i’m socal born and raised, and i go to school in norcal.

I hate the sun. It wouldn’t be that hard for me. I’m a snow kind of person.

HERESY!!! ;)

I’m in FL, 20 minutes from the beach. I agree with patientlywaiting about “sunny days”. We have so many it just becomes expected. And, I don’t know how it is in CA, but during the summer it gets unbearably hot and you basically can’t do anything outside without becoming exhausted in less than 30 minutes. In fact, as I sit here on this 23rd day of November, it’s 81 degrees with 70% humidity. And, on my campus tour of UF this July, I drank two bottles of water in the thirty minutes we were outside; I think it was at least 100 and I find it difficult to see how anyone could find doing anything outside in that heat to be enjoyable.

I live in Las Vegas, a desert, so not exactly a nice kind of warm. But even if I lived in socal, there’d be no temptation for me. I LOVE to wear sweaters and pants, so I like cool weather. Plus, I am just an indoor person altogether. Only you outdoorsy people would get tempted.

Icarus, LMAO
