How Can Applying Late Hurt Your Chances?

I will be 21 when I start college in Fall 2012. I took two gap years after 11th and one after 12th for various reasons. I’m expecting a 2200+ in the Nov. SAT (results got delayed), and my school grades aren’t so good (80s and 90s in 10th and 11th), and 70s in Science for 12th.

Will a good SAT score, 3+ years of work experience, extreme personal hardships, good SAT II scores (730, 780 and 790 in Math 2, Lit and Physics) make up for my age and gap years?

Generally, how many 20- and 21-year olds would you find starting out college? Will I look “out of place”, especially as an international? And will I stand any chance at Ivies?

Has anyone on CC started college late?
