Hello everyone, i am a student in India who is about to start the 11th grade. I have been wondering about admissions to college and stuff, and i was wondering if my circumstances would have any affect on college admissions.

My cicumstances:
My father had a stroke during my 8th grade year. At the time i was in the US. I had been there since i was 4 years old. This has left him permanently disabled leaving him unable to walk, and communicate. My father was sent to india, so he could receive affordable care. Obviously this has had a lasting effect on me. Next, the following summer(i was going into the ninth grade) my mother went to India to visit my father. Although this was supposed to be a 1 month visit, she was held out of the country for around 6 months due to problems with her visa. During this time my grandmother had to come from india to stay with me throughout the course of my first semester of freshman year. We lacked all mobility due to me being under aged, and my grandma did not have a drivers license. How ever we got through it thanks to support from many people. All of this however had an effect on my grades, and my mental state. I did manage A’s and B’s but i am much more capable than that. Lastly, because my mom was held out of the country for so long and was in a tough financial situation she made the decision for us to move to India. By the time we moved and i got admitted into the school 3 months of the indian school year had already passed, and i had missed out on a relatively large chunk of percentage points for my 10th grade year. For those of you who dont know 10th grade is a very important year in India(as is 12th). I managed to catch up and finished the year with an 8.4/10 GPA despite missing so much shcool. However the toughest part was adapting to the new country. The environment, culture, surroundings, new school system, people, etc were all night and day differences from what I had known in the states.

Personally i think i have done a very good job especially in my first year of school in India, and i know it will only get better. I know that my marks are pretty good, however they are not excellent which is what is expected at top schools in the US(especially when dealing international students). I don’t want it to seem like i am whining, or complaining about my circumstances because i know there are people in this world who have to struggle through much more. However, i do believe that these are pretty extenuating circumstances, and i was wondering if admissions at universities would consider these? So if I end up doing well on my SAT’s (and i know it’s a big “if” but I’m confident) would i still be a possible consideration for maybe some top 20 schools in the US? I plan on being a physics major right now because i have found i really enjoy it.

I’m sorry for the length of this post but I really want some answers so i can start doing some planning for my post-secondary education, and i am not sure who to consult on the subject.

Thank you in advance for the responses!
