I’m honestly really lost. Even if I try my hardest and save for an entire year which is how much time I have I won’t be able to make 200 thousand dollars it’s just not realistic in my situation that I am in.
I’m a college student from California. I’ve been considering transferring to NYU my sophomore year and have come to a conclusion that, that is my plan and that’s what I truly want to do and where I want to be.
BUT the tuition situation is killing me.
I just don’t know how I can make or earn 200 grand for my entire stay at NYU. Even scholarships won’t do much to make that price go down and I can’t even take a loan that big so it seems impossible… My family is lower class so we’ve never even had more than 20k our entire lives maybe…
But I feel really strong about going to NYU and I just want to see how I can attempt to even get that money for my tuition. Is it possible… I’m sure there aren’t all rich kids who go there so it should be possible I just don’t know how yet.
I’m sorry if I’m all over the place and confusing. If you can give me some advice or anything it would very much be helpful either way. Thank you.
How much financial aid would you qualify for?
I just checked and it says… (I’m not familiar with this at all so I’ll put what it said sorry)
But it said
Estimated total cost of attendance: $66,542
- Estimated total grant aid:
(Includes both merit and need based grant and scholarship aid from Federal, State, or Local Governments, or the Institution): $48,394
Estimated Net Price After Grants and Scholarships: $18,148
I’m not sure which one apply a to me though… And it also says not every student gets finicial aid as well so a 50/50 chance of getting it and not getting it.
I also heard that’s transfer students who are out of state say that it’s hard to get finicial aid and they barely grant it at times? I’m not sure if that’s true though.
I would wait to see what your actual financial aid package is. According to your estimated net price, it would “only” come out to around 18,000 a year. But wait to see what you actually end up with.
One piece of advice is to get rid of the idea of NYU as “my plan and that’s what I truly want to do and where I want to be.” Unfortunately, lots of people truly want things that are out of reach. I live in NYC and even though I know that a West Village brownstone is where I truly want to be living, my paycheck tells me that I simply can’t afford it
It is unrealistic to take out 200k in loans. That is serious, life-crushing debt to have.
NYU is known for giving horrible financial aid to incoming freshman, let alone limited funds to transfers.
You can’t afford NYU. You CANNOT afford NYU.
Your family can’t borrow that much in funds. If they are low income, they won’t qualify for those types of loans.
You can’t work and make that much money without a degree.
You’re from California and can’t find a school in California?
Sorry, you don’t want to hear this, but you can’t afford NYU.
And you are leaving out $5,000+ more indirect costs of attendenance. Plus you are assuming they meet 100% of your need, when on average they meet 72% of need. That could be many thousands need to come up with.

You won’t qualify for state or local funds because you are NOT an NY resident, so that projected amount is even lower.
Don’t stay on campus, rent a room with other individuals. That would reduce the fee. The problem with college like NYU, is that the room and Board can cost around $25,000, which is like paying another year’s worth of tuition. If you still have difficulty with the tuition of NYU, just don’t go. It isn’t worth the debt!
Think carefully about whether the debt is worth it for your goals and expected outcome. I think paying 200K is insane for a generic liberal arts degree, assuming no wealthy parents.
I’m in the same boat as you. I reeeeaalllly, reeeallly want to go to NYU soo, soooo badly but the cost is insane. I’m also a California community college student, and from what I’ve heard they do not give any merit aid for community college students.
