How can I change my major to computer science in SJSU? Is it hard?

I got accepted to SJSU for chemical engineering but not for computer science,I am planning to go there and change my major, how can I do that? and is it hard ? and I really want to take computer science and if I won’t get that in SJSU I am gonna leave the college .

“Due to impaction, even if the student has met all the requirements, there is no guarantee of admission to the Computer Science major. Final admission will depend on the capacity of the new major and the ranking based on the GPA in the courses required to apply and the SJSU Cumulative GPA.”

If you want to major in computer science, you’ll probably want to consider other schools where you are either directly admitted to the major, or you have a clear path to declare or be admitted to the major. Where else have you applied?

UC Davis,UC Santa scruz,Berkeley and Merced but I only want to go to either Berkeley or SJSU but there is very low acceptance rate of Berkeley so I am very confused right now to what do

The school name on your college diploma matters much less for CS than the education and job skill set you acquire while you are there so any of the other schools you applied will still give you an excellent CS education. You can always take a chance at switching majors at SJSU but would you happy there if you cannot change majors?

actually someone told me that in CS it mainly depends on where your college is located so you can make connections and get internships

If you want to add more CSUs to your application so that you end up with more options at the end of the admissions season, you can go to this page Application Dates & Deadlines | CSU and use the form to find out which are still accepting applications. Do this right away if you’re interested in adding more CSUs. For example, I checked CSU Chico and they are listed as still accepting applications until tomorrow (Feb 15).

There are also out of state universities and private universities still accepting applications at this time. If you’d like some suggestions, I’m sure posters here would be glad to help you, if you list your budget and give a sense of your stats, etc.

Being local mainly helps you become aware of smaller companies that exist nearby but which do not have a big recruiting presence on web platforms. The advantage used to be bigger before than it is now, because previously much more recruiting and interviewing was in-person, and there was less use of web platforms for employers and applicants to find each other.

UCSC, CSUEB (applications open until 2/15), and SFSU (applications open until 4/1) are also nearby if that is your top priority.

do you know any other universities in California that are accepting applications other than CSU’s?

which one would you prefer me if I get accepted to UCSC,UC Davis and UC merced for computer science

If costs are equal, you may want to look at the courses and curricula for CS and general education requirements to see which seems more interesting to you.

UCSC is nearer to Silicon Valley and in a beach town, but off-campus housing availability is very difficult. UCD and UCM are in the rural Central Valley.

so you mean UCSC?

You need to see which matches your preferences best.

Don’t count on acceptance by UCD (20%) and UCSC (60%) for CS major. If you really want to stick with CS major, only true safety is UCM. Or like other said, apply to other non-impacted CSU such as CSU East Bay or SFSU. In case you are thinking of CC transfer, UCR and UCM are the only UCs accepting TAG for CS major. Good Luck.

I don’t know off the top of my head, but you can google “california universities still accepting applications” or “california universities with late deadlines” and see what you can find. There are definitely more options out of state with late deadlines. However, since OOS and private schools can vary a lot in price, you would really need to post something about your budget in order to get useful suggestions.
