I wan’t to attend a six week summer school program at exeter to take an SAT prep course and an essay writting course. Both are areas I need a lot of work in. My mom is convinced that I want it for the wrong reasons and that it won’t be worth the money in the end. How can I convince her that it will help me prepare for college?

It seems like it could be an expensive way to do a SAT prep course. Is it expensive?

Are you local to Exeter? Do you have less expensive options like a local community college?

Surely, there are less expensive ways to achieve what you’re trying to accomplish.

I assume it’s pretty expensive if it requires residence there, and given that it’s marketed as “exeter” program.

If so, how do you justify such an expensive SAT prep course? What it is that they are teaching that is so secret and so special that it warrants that kind of money? SAT prep is such a well established matter I don’t think the likes of Princeton Review and Kaplan missed out on some major tricks to teach kids. There are many available courses on line and in person. After all, we are not talking about some patented, life saving drug that is not available anywhere else.

My S2 will take some prep courses with one of the two well known program and we are paying a few hundred dollars. We don’t need to save money so if there was such a miracle program, I would spend the money. But I don’t think there is such a thing. If they had such a trick, they would try to make a lot more money by turning it into some kind of franchised operation available throughout the country. They are just making it sound prestigious and try to talk gullible souls into paying top dollars.

I am completely with your mom. That’s not the good use of hard eared family income.

Instead of trying to convince her that it will help you prepare for college, how about demonstrating how much you want to go to the program by earning all the money needed for it yourself? That will say more about how important this summer school program is to you than anything else you can possibly do: pay for it yourself.
