I grew up in West Los Angeles. Just before my Junior year in HS started, my family moved to a suburb near Salt Lake City, UT. That was temporary… now, we are open to moving anywhere in the country (provided we find an apartment at around $1,500 per month for 3 bedrooms).

Now… this Utah High School I was at, ranked me in the top 40%. This is because they did not rank by weighted GPA, and the unweighted GPAs were all heavily inflated. So my 4.1 was worth absolutely nothing, and my 3.6 UW did not stand a chance against the myriad of 4.0s. On the other hand, I received the highest SAT score in my class…

We will not be able to return to our original spot in Los Angeles either… so since we now have the freedom to move pretty much anywhere (for various reasons which I will not explain, but we’re not outlaws or anything crazy like that), where should look I for suggestions to provide my mom? Am I ever, under any circumstance, going to find a public High School where my 4.1 would rank me top 5%? How about top 10%? And how can I plan this ahead of time, without just showing up to a random town and asking the local high schools? Obviously, my class rank might not be accurate at this point for me, but many top colleges still value that statistic when admitting students, for the good-sake of their magazine rankings and what-not.

I know this is very broad and maybe not even very clear, but absolutely any advice or pointers that would help me in my search would be very appreciated. I will also try to clear up anything fuzzy if needs be. Thank you in advance! :)

My high school had no APs or other higher-level courses, and therefore had no weighting. If you have a 3.8 UW or so, you could be in the top 10%.

How does rural Ohio sound to you?

I don’t know how we can make this choice for you. I don’t think that this is as big of an issue as you think it is.

JBVirtuoso: Haha well rural Ohio doesn’t sound that bad, but the school you referenced to wouldn’t really fix anything since they don’t rank by weighted GPA.

lockn: Thanks, that sounds pretty good to me. I’ll just settle into wherever we settle and make sure the school doesn’t rank or something like that.

panic: Trust me, if you were working hard, comfortably placed in the top 10%, and then shifted for no reason to only the top 40%, thus pretty much preventing you acceptance to the schools you had be dreaming of for years, and thus invalidating all of the hard work you put into your classes… well, you would panic. I’m only asking for advice so that it doesn’t happen again. That smug attitude of yours makes me wish I never found College Confidential.

Here in Miami, weighted GPAs dominate (and they’re SUPER inflated).

I have a 3.71 UW but a 5.6 Weighted. And I’m #1 in my class (unofficially, though, because Miami-Dade County does not rank students by Val/Sal/etc.).

[name]: Well I’ve never heard of that policy but it actually makes a lot of sense, I’ll have to just ask individual schools on that I guess.

ansar: That’s awesome that you’re #1 in your class! 5.1 is definitely a strange looking GPA and it would definitely crush my 4.1, however it is the 5.1 was calculated haha. How does that work anyway? Is it over 6?
