How can I get a good recommendation in a big class?

I know that the most important part of transfer to UC is GPA, essay and ECA. However, recommendation is also a part of admission process.

I’m now in cc and it is my third quarter. My GPA is pretty fine. I got a special experience that I’m going to mention on essay. For ECA, I’m in a few clubs and work.

My concern is getting a good recommendation. I’m planning on majoring in Econ, but as many of you know, econ class has a very big body of students (more than 40).

I ended up with A in micro last semester and now taking macro.

Even though I was a few students who got A in micro, the professor did not even know my name (not sure if she can even remember my face). I’m not saying that the professor did not care about students. She was one of the best professors I’ve met but due to a huge population in class, she was not able to memorize every single student. It is understandable.

and I wasn’t like a student who sits in the back, does well in tests, and ends up with A.
I’ve always been sitting in front and asking a few questions every day.

Now I’m taking macroecon. Since I’m going to major in Econ after I transfer, I think it is better to get a recommendation from econ professor. However, class is even larger (more than 50 students). and I heard that the professor is fine but isnt very friendly to students. I’m not sure how I can get a good recommendation from professor in this kind of situation…

Am I putting too much obsession on recommendation? Will UC not care that much even if I get a normal/bad recommendation?

I don’t think they require LoRs if you are a transfer applicant

yeah it is not required but recommended, mentioned on website and also heard that from UC reps. It is better to submit one right? Additionally, I will also apply to some private schools as well. I dont think getting a recommendation requires much effort and time. Getting a good one in a big class is the problem for me :(

Letters of recommendation are not required or recommended for transfer applicants. Their review is based on self-reported information provided on the UC Application form. In the event that they would need anything like this from you during the selection process, they would request them from you specifically.

However, some campuses/majors may require letters of recommendation as part of a supplemental application review. This is usually for majors like Film and Television at UCLA.

Did you apply to UCs for Fall 2014 admission?

No, its not. They don’t want your letter of rec when you apply as an Econ major. Nobody is going to read it.

UC Admissions doesn’t ask for letters of rec, nor do they want them.

But, to answer the more general question: The best way to get to know a professor is to go to their office hours. After you’re at a UC, chances are you’ll still get big classes… again, office hours can help. Or, if you’re really ambitious, becoming a TA for a class or doing research for a professor will give you a lot of one-on-one time, and you’ll really get to know them.

lol What. No.
