How can I get the word out about a college club dealing with a sensitive topic?

The consequences of Pornography addiction are becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society. This is due to the high speed readiness and availability of porn. People entering college and in college already are one of the first generations who grew up with this easy access. I want to start a Porn Revovery/Support/Awareness club. To register a club you need at least 5 core members. I will not know anyone at this new school I’m transferring to. How can I get the word out & recruit for this club, considering the sensitive/taboo topic?

How many people do you think would actually attend such a club?

Great question. I’d be happy with a small amount, knowing at least someone is benefiting in some way. It could also have no turnout whatsoever, i’m still willing to try though.

Fair enough! I was just curious – first I’ve heard of a club like that. Good luck!

My school’s counseling center hosts therapy and support groups. Not for porn addiction, but things like eating disorders, sexual assault survival, being a student of color at a primarily White institution, and LGBTQ life issues. I believe it’s therapist-moderated, but the point is peer support. If your school does something similar, or even if it doesn’t but has a counseling center where something like that could happen, you could talk to them about having a space set up for that. And then you could recruit people with the help of the center.

Oh please. The pornography wars have been going on for centuries and access to porn isn’t doing anything close to what you think to society.

I don’t think you’re going to get any traction even if you get the word out. But if you insist, try contacting counseling centers and giving them your information. They can give the information about your club to anyone that they feel needs it. Don’t be surprised if they don’t make any referrals.

I agree with @romanigypsyeyes on a lot of things, but not on this. The easy access to and very nature of what young men are exposed to these days can make pornography a detriment to healthy sexual relationships.

I’d hold off on implementing any club until you’ve been on campus for awhile. Once you build contacts and friendships, finding like minded individuals and ideas for implementing you club might become more obvious. I don’t think you want to “hit the ground running” with this one as a new student. I would also focus on the awareness aspect first and the other elements could be an outgrowth of that.

For men who form a relationship with porn pre-puberty or before they have any real sexual experience, it is a HUGE problem. @romanigypsyeyes
