I’m in 7th grade, planning to apply in the latter half of 8th to a couple boarding schools (Cranbrook in particular). The only thing is, my statistics aren’t very unique or outstanding and I don’t have many long-term commitments.
(current stats):
I’m in 3 clubs for 1 year (junior honor society, robotics, and math). I placed 4th with my team in a robotics competition and am currently preparing for a math competition.
I’m in advanced math, english, history, and science and my grades are all A-B, but I’m lacking a bit in english. Outside of school I do weekly volunteering, independent learning of 2 languages and online math+programming courses.
I like to think that my ecs have a sort of connection between them, but I’m not sure if I need to be doing more.
In general I’d like a way to add to this in some way and in a sense, enrich my current activities to make up for lack of achievement.
AOs at BS understand that for a kid to have ECs, sports, etc they probably need a parent who can drive them.
Every kid, though will take class and be part of the community, so the best thing you can do is to do those things well at your current school. Think about how you can help others at your current school and be more involved there.
Ideas include helping new students with orientation, helping with theater productions, organizing a tabletop/board games club.
Your teachers next year will be writing your recs, so be the kind of student they’ll endorse. This means not simply behaving in class and getting good grades, but asking them to challenge you. Ask how to do better, not forthegrade but because you’recurious… If you like an assigned reading, ask what else they might recommend in that genre. If you’re struggling with a concept, ask for help.
And read. Outside of school. It’ll help in many ways. It can be whatever you like – but it’ll expand your horizons and increase your vocabulary as a start.
