How can I improve/strengthen my application?

I am currently a junior at a public high school in texas wanting to apply to McCombs and my stats are as follows:
Class rank: Top 22% (weighted 4.1 uw 3.5) - i know its bad, i somewhat slacked off a little until my junior year
Also have only taken honors/ap classes.
ACT : 35(could maybe do better,am taking it in a month)
SAT Subject tests: Have taken the math one, got around 720 but i know UT doesnt look at subject tests
EC: member of multiple honor societies, business organization, math and science teams
Leadership positions: class officer, secretary of science organization, historian of business organization, and parliamentarian of student council my freshman year.
Also helped found and start a club dealing with children in poor countries and fundraising for them. Have also raised over 5,000$ in research for various causes and am looking to start my own small startup business / charity.
Have over 100+ community service hours
2 jobs; one is tutoring and another at retail
Have had an internship at a business firm, and have spent much of my summers volunteering.
Will work hard on my college essays and could get good teacher recs from my business teacher.
Please let me know if i have any chance of getting in i have wanted to go here since my freshman year of high school.

*Also, major awards would just include Ap scholar award
Additionally, I have played the piano for 6 years but I don’t think that matters because I haven’t won any awards for it.

Anyone?

I would advise you to attend a community college, get excellent grades, and then apply to UT. Rank for Freshman is the most important factor, and yours is nowhere near 8%. Also, Moody is extremely competetive making it difficult to get in. Go to community college, and ace it! (not trying to sound harsh, just trying to help)

@britni12 Thanks! I noticed you said moody… did you mean McCombs ?

@pinxrt1 haha sorry. Yes McCombs.

The above poster is probably correct but you never know at UT. If you could write a great essay and possibly explain the GPA and the turnaround in the GPA, it could possibly help. To be honest UT is not the only school that will be asking that question so try to explain in your essay or in one of your references if applicable. Do look at other schools and don’t pin all hope on UT. You have got great stats otherwise and I think many schools would be interested in you.

@GTAustin Thanks! I heard that for 2017, they aren’t doing CAP anymore… is that true?

No, I have not heard that. Maybe you should start another thread specifically for the question and see if anybody else has. Do look at other schools besides UT. This year, I saw a lot of odd decisions by the school when accepting students into majors. I saw students with great stats and ECs get denied and then students with significantly lower stats and ECs get accepted especially in the engineering/CS area. Apply but do not consider it a safety.

Every year, there are rumors that UTSA and UTA are going to withdraw from CAP because it hurts their graduation and retention rates. A few years ago there were a lot of articles on it in San Antonio. So far, every year it continues. Until you see it in writing from someone official, it is just a rumor.

@GTAustin thanks! i also know of a few friends with statistics slightly lower than mine getting accepted into CS. Maybe it has to do with essays? Do you think if i was able to spend a lot of time and write a good quality essay would that help with my chances even due to my crap class rank? And that i also have some business experience due to my internship?

Yes, writing a great essay and having business experience will help. Again, if you can explain what motivated you in your Junior year to really start taking things more seriously and show the upward trajectory, I think that would help. Do consider other schools though. You need a safety that guarantees a specific major and UT is not that for anybody.

Alright thanks! I’m going to spend a lot of time on my essays and continue improving my grades.
