How can I promote my idea?

Sorry, I didn’t know which forum to post this under…and since I will probably talk about it at my college interview, I thought I might as well put it here.

I am a volunteer for my local ambulance corps. A few weeks ago, when we were transporting a patient to the ER and one of the EMTs was filling out a patient care report (information about a patient), I wondered what would happen if the patient were unconscious and no family member was available.

So, I thought of the idea of putting medical information in your cell phone. This way, an EMT would be able to easily contact family members, look at your allergies, etc.

I really want to promote this idea to cell phone companies with the hopes that they will consider implementing a program for this information into mobile devices. However, I feel quite discouraged. I’m just one kid with a crazy idea. I don’t have any basis yet, so why would they even listen?

Does anyone have any suggestions for my cause? I really want to do it, but I’m afraid it would be a waste of time.

Also, do you think colleges would like this even if I did not end up being so successful?

Good luck; it sounds like a great idea. Like the bracelets only better. If you spend a lot of time and effort on this, even if it goes nowhere, it could be the topic of an essay to show your perseverence, helpfulness, what you’ve learned, etc.

Not to burst your bubble of originality or anything, but I know a number of people who already have the emergency info in their phones. They either put “in case emergency” next to names and phone numbers or simply put (ICE) next to the name. Your idea comes with merit though as I doubt all paramedics know to look under ICE, but couldn’t they also just call “Mom” or “Dad”? Just a couple things to think about when fleshing out your idea.

However, this is something a college might love. It’s less about what your idea is and more about how passionately you pursue it. If you show you’re motivated and truly want to improve the lives of others, I can’t imagine any school not being impressed by that.

Just remember: All great ideas started out with people thinking they were wastes of time.
