Our son is in California and we transferred an Illinois car title to him. It’s the original title we got when we bought the car at CarMax. He submitted the paperwork to register the car in California and got back a note stating that an original title should show the word “VOID” on a photocopy, and that didn’t happen. We have a photocopy at home (made several years ago) showing the “VOID”, but when our son tried at work, it didn’t appear.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get this invisible word to appear on a photocopy? DS tried making the copy darker but it didn’t help. Or any other advice on how to prove to California that it’s the original title? A duplicate title costs $95 so we would rather not go that route if at all possible. Thanks!

(Edit - I learned it’s called a pantograph and may not appear on all copier settings. But not what settings to use!)

I just suggested that (Kinko’s) along with trying the photocopy in color instead of B&W. I’m learning a lot! Not sure he can tell the state of California to go to Kinko’s, though! It’s frustrating because I’m looking at a B&W photocopy right now with the word “VOID” all over it. Grr!

We didn’t have that problem when S registered our HI car in CA. Maybe if you send a COPY of your copy showing the VOID plus his original, it will satisfy CA. Never heard of that requirement before–S registered his car in Oct 2009 in CA.

I am mailing him a copy of my copy but if he can produce a proper “VOID” photocopy with all the recent signatures and dates turning it over to him, it would probably be better. Especially if he can advise how he got the word to appear. Aggravating, hmm? Perhaps another clerk wouldn’t even have the issue! I’m going to blame Arnold!

LOL Dstark - they are both on our short list now! But DH does not want to make a decision until he gets through his hip replacement which he hasn’t even scheduled yet so nothing happening for a few months! Portland would give us more house and better COL, but I think San Diego would give us more everything else. We did find several areas that could work out if the right house came along, and I am keeping track on the real estate web site that the realtor gave us. So there will now be a hiatus.

Oh yea, now I remember, we had S join AAA of CA so he could get everything taken care of there instead of DMV. They are authorized to handle registrations, transfers & pretty much everything. They were VERY nice & that made it worth S paying for the AAA membership right there! No hassles at all & the AAA people even let him make an appointment if he preferred, but otherwise were able to help him without undue waiting. You can call AAA (if you’re a member) & ask them for advice.

Thanks HIMom - DS is still an associate member on our Illinois AAA membership (although I don’t know if he should be) so I’ll add that to the suggestions for him. He got back all the paperwork from the DMV and presumably has to refile it. I’m not sure the AAA can help but it sure can’t hurt!

dstrk - go to sleep…til later this summer. If only it was up to me!

The CA AAA has nearly all the power of DMV but are much more member-friendly, so it can’t hurt. Best of all for S, they were right across the street from his USC campus. I’d give them a try. We were not allowed to keep S on our AAA coverage once he turned 21.

We took our older s off our AAA membership when he got a new car that came with a 3 yr road service. Unfortunately that car was totalled a few months ago and he bought a used car. We were able to add him back onto our AAA membership as long as he was under 25 (he was ust barely) and a stuent. They didnt ask for any proof and I figure he is always learning…
