How colleges compare students from the same school?

Hi all,
I’m currently a junior attending an international school in Korea that often sends people to low Ivies (UPenn, Brown, Cornell) . My dream school is Stanford and UPenn, but I just realized that there are around 5 people in my grade who are applying to the same schools as me. To be honest, I don’t have an outstanding GPA (around 3.78), but my EC’s are quite extraordinary and I’d say more unique than other applicants in my school. I also have a lot of leadership positions than most of the people in my grade. But the people I am competing with in my grade have GPA’s well over 4.0…
Will the colleges discard me just because I have lower statistics than the people from the same class as me? I’m worried. I didn’t even receive my SAT score yet so I’m more anxious…
Thank you!

If that’s ur wighted gpa, then your chances are pretty low. How about you tell us what your ec’s are? Also what’s ur practice sat score or ur predicted score. It’s difficult to chance without that

@finallyfree‌
I have leadership positions in Newspaper, Yearbook, and the literary magazine. I was in an editor position for a summer journalism camp at Stanford.
I am a head of a charity club that has a goal of incorporating and bringing technology to kids in Cambodia. We’re doing a lot of fundraisers and campaigns for this. (this may probably the one that might slightly put me apart from the other kids)
I am also involved in a varsity sport for 4 years. I was captain this year and probably next year as well. I only have one award from it however, since i was unable to go to competition due to my injuries.
My practice SAT came out to be 1970.

First of all colleges do not have quotas for how many students they will accept from any high school so your are competing not against others from your school but rather against all other applicants. Colleges look at the whole application but GPA, and difficulty of courses taken are certainly very important components of the evaluation process. I agree that your GPA if weighted is low for Ivy and equivalent schools. ECs are important but unless you are a recruited athlete or something ECs won’t get you into college – one needs to meet the criteria for admission first.

@superhay‌ if thats ur sat score before ANY preperation or sat schooling, then I think you can easily get your sat score to a 2200. I got 1590 on my diagnostic sat test (i took it at a sat prep center) and after a class that lasted 10 weeks, i got my score up to 2050. i think you can get a great sat score if you got that without any preperation.

unfortunately, ivy leagues will still most probably not take you with that gpa. usually people that even consider ivy’s have atleast 3.8 UW gpas (and thats still low). your EC’s are great (above average), but there are still lots of people with similar achievements. (lots of people these days start charities, fundraise, have leadership position, and play sports).

Your application will definitely be a good one, but I think youre a bit on the low side of the ivys. But PLEASE, go ahead and apply… im not trying to discourage you from applying. What’s your major? I can try suggesting some good schools you should consider.
