Hey I’m currently a junior in high school and just finished my first semester. Here are my statistics:

4.2 GPA weighted
2 years ASB: Technical representative
3 years Key Club: Historian and Vice President
3 years Muslim Student Association: Treasurer and President
3 years Science Olympiad: Two silver medals at regional competition
(First year) California Scholarship Federation
(First year) National Honor Society
2 years Red Cross

Senior Year classes:

AP Calculus
AP Physics
AP Statistics
AP English
AP Gov/Econ
ASB

I haven’t taken the SAT yet. Will do so in January. Although I plan on getting a 1900 by the third attempt

Ethnicity: Egyptian/Arab
Speak fluent Arabic (my first language, lived in Egypt for a small portion of my life as well)

I want to either major in civil or computer engineering.

Am I competitive enough? Can not being Asian or White play to my advantage? Since I am a minority and underrepresented?

And will they consider how much I want to go there if I show that in my statement? (as opposed to someone with a 2200 SAT and 4.7 GPA who just passively applied and doesn’t really care?)

Do I have a good chance of getting in if I show how much I know about the programs they offer and much I want to go there?

In your statement, you’re not really going to express how much you want to get into the University of California. It’s more about talking about yourself and explaining the person you are; the goal to the statement is that the adcom get to know more about the applicant.

I don’t really know how your being a minority will come into play, since the UCs are not technically allowed to practice affirmative action. I wouldn’t expect it to play that much of an advantage. Your ECs seem strong enough, and your GPA is around average, but I would definitely suggest aiming for a 2000+ or even 2100+ to be safe. You WILL be able to achieve it if you practice enough. If you can break 2100, I’d consider you a competitive enough applicant. Good luck~

I find the link below to be a good indicator of your chances. Click on the link below, go to “Custom Tables”, answer some questions, and enter up to 3 “mean characteristics” at a time to see what the admit rates are for all the UC’s, including UCLA:

You can start studying for the SAT now. Go get the Collegeboard Blue Book and take a practice test, or take the free one online. If you can get to 1900, you can get to 2000+. Not getting 2050+ is definitely going to hurt you. If you’re applying for engineering, keep in mind that it’s still going to be either required or highly recommended to take a science and Math subject test.

UCs do not consider minority status in admissions. If you can get at least a 2050 on the SAT or a 30 on the ACT then you have a good shot. Also try to get your UC GPA up to a 4.3 if you can

In regards to the rest of my class, I’m ranked #27 in a class of 830. In out school, its generally considered good if you are somewhere in the top 40

About how many people from your school normally get in? What’s a typical SAT score for people from your school that get in? The former should give you a rough guide. The latter is probably more difficult to find out but will help clarify some.

Last year we had about 8 get into UCLA. Sorry to bring up the race thing again, but all of them were the typical Asian with a 2100+ SAT score. I mean colleges would look beyond the typical genius Asian and go for someone else, (say colored) with a lower SAT score right?
