I have recently gotten into SDSU and I don’t understand how…I kind of feel like its a joke and they are going to take my admission from me. I have heard that this college is competitive and my stats are not competative at all. I am black, I dont live in Cali, 3.4 UW GPA (my school doesn’t weigh GPAs), no AP classes (literally none), cheer for four years (varsity two currently captain), and I am the first in my family to go to college. I also applied to major in history if that means anything… I just don’t get how this happened my dad keeps saying it was a blessing from God but seriously…how…

I don’t think it’s all about gpa test scores yada yada just imagine what the student body would be like if they only accepted perfect gpa test score clones you had something that the admissions officers liked and thought would be a good fit for the school. Congrats on your acceptance!

The admission counselors saw something in what you presented them in your application that made them want you. You don’t need AP classes to be smart and from everything else that you wrote about you seem to have a strong academic and EC life. Be proud of yourself you deserve it!!! Congratulations!!!

First of all you’re black, believe it or not it plays a large part (although imo it’s unfair to both as whites/asians have to try harder to get into same university, while admission officers set a lower standard for black/latino which imo is an insult) Second of all you’re Recs are good, and the fact that you are the first in your family to go to college helped you.

Try harder… That ****es me off I’m black and I work damn hard 4.2 gpa many leadership positions and an internship / a lot of community involvement I’ll be damned if some brat tells me that I don’t have to try as hard or I only got accepted because I’m black if anything I work 5 times harder when you have zero support from your parents and have been so poor that the free meal you get at school is your only meal for the day, if i don’t get the material mommy and daddy aren’t going to pay for tutoring. And if you look at the percent of minorities accepted compared to the ‘white/Asians’ what are you even complaining about

congratulations!

@California I don’t think anyone is trying to make you upset. You sound like a very hard-working person and you have obviously had a tough time growing up. Don’t let displeasure with affirmative action phase you. It’s not a direct attack on you but a problem with the system as a whole.

IMO most people would be fine with aa helping you out a bit. It’s undeniable, however, that many of the latinos and blacks that are helped haven’t struggled for meals. Their parents were middle-class and up, they didn’t live in the inner-city. Don’t let it bother you.

Sorry to snap its a sensitive area for me… I transferred into a very racists school that is like 80% white/Asian/Indian and in every single class but one I am the only black person. I remember one day sitting in News production I was in the editors room editing photos for the paper and the class somehow broke into a discussion about affirmative action “I wish I was black! etc.” and when we discussed uc v. Bakke my that was even worse!

Just imagine what the student body would be like if race was not included. Imagine if only what you worked for (GPA, rank, test scores) was the criteria for acceptance. I know I know… this sounds like a silly idea, but imagine if the color skin you were born in had zero impact on admissions. There would be alot less black and hispanics out there wondering “How and why did I get accepted?”

As a hispanic student I cannot stand the idea that people think I need a handicap to be equal to the rest of the student body. For the past 200 years America has been trying not to look at the color of your skin, and only focus on the person you are. AA is the farthest thing from equality. Unless you believe every black and hispanic family is poor and underprivledged, this idea of race playing a factor in admissions should drive you crazy, no matter your ethnicity.

I am happy that race plays a factor. I think affirmative action is great thing. I mean look at what has happened to UCLA since that law was made in California. 32% of the students are white 34% asian and 3% black. If UCLA used affirmative action those stats would be way different. I think its a little bit of a problem that there are more asians than whites.

Lets please not make this a racial thing. UCLA and Berkeley are the main backups for the top asian/whites who are rejected to the ivies. Their asian/white populations are high for this reason.

Meanwhile, blacks are just as likely to be accepted to Berkeley as Stanford. Guess which school they are going to choose, lowering the population of blacks at Berkeley?

I’m not going to complain about the rules, and as the other thread you made attests to, I am happy for you, whether you got in due to being black. No one will care when you are at SDSU.
