How did our UF hopefuls do at FSU?

Both of my UF kids applied to UCF and not FSU. UCF was more appealing for engineering students (and UCF offered them great merit awards).

OOS son accepted into FSU with in-state tuition. This is an offer that is hard to pass up. He also was accepted to U of Miami. Waiting for UF decision. His dad is a gator; I’m a 'Cane, so it’s a little strange for both of us to consider our son possibly being a 'Nole. I guess our family covers all the bases around Florida (his dad also received his master’s degree from UCF).
My heart wants to send him to UM; my 529 says FSU.

Accepted OOS to FSU.
32 ACT
I think 4.43 GPA.
We are Gators, and my son is not very excited, but he got the OOS waiver and the price is something we can’t ignore.

FSU’s offer of in-state tuition (OOS tuition waivers), has to be one of the best deals in the country for those looking to go OOS.

:star: A top 20 public university at $6,500 a year for tuition and fees. :star:

@Gator88NE My kids would not go there if you paid them…

And, I am ok with that.

imagine instilling a belief in your children that a petty football rivalry is enough to validate the fact that they shouldn’t go to a top 20 university if not accepted to UF

Denied FSU still hoping for PaCE at UF. Spoke to admissions apparently UF does admissions way different.

@newjerseysenior Yes, UF admissions is holistic and unpredictable, so it is possible.

Also, not sure if you are interested in UCF, but it has become a popular choice down here these days, and they may still be accepting applications.

Best of luck!

@CCpancakes81 Petty!?!

Seriously, I agree with your overall point. However, to assume that it is only the parent’s allegiance doesn’t give much credit to the kid. Taking UF/FSU out of the equation, my son simply didn’t like UCF. I have been on two tours of the school and been impressed both times. He’s done his research, gone on the tour and decided it’s not for him. I’m sure every parent has a similar story about one school or another. In the end, he’s going next year, not me.

And while I have been trying to temper my FSU rhetoric over the past year or so, it is difficult to undo 17 years of Gator indoctrination. He has Gator bed sheets!

My son’s first choice is UF, and I think he has a good chance of getting in. If he doesn’t, then we will take a road trip to visit USF, FSU and maybe even UCF again. Then, once I think he has been exposed to the various opportunities, he will make his choice.

@CCpancakes81 , I agree. I am about as big of a Gator fan as there is, and have my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from UF. Having said that, I have a daughter at FSU (who was accepted to UF PaCE, but don’t get me started on that). She chose FSU, and could not have had a better experience there so far. She’s been accepted to a very competitive major, Communication Sciences and Disorders, joined a sorority, has been inducted into several honor societies, and has made lifelong friends. Honestly, FSU now reminds me very much of the way UF was when most of us attended, very smart kids who still have a lot of fun.

With that being said, my second child is in the admissions process now, and wants a specific major that UF offers, so it is his top choice. I hope he is accepted, but knowing what I do not about FSU, I would be happy for him to attend there as well.

@newjerseysenior can you share what they told you about admissions and how they do it? Besides the normal they look at everything

@jhmoney I was told that they read an application and score it with a group of people, at least two people look at it and if there are any discrepancies a third or fourth even makes a decision. That is why they take so long. Different system this year

@CCpancakes81 Thanks for your feedback! I will take your parenting advice under advisement.

@flprepaidmom Just saw a post on reddit from FSU Admissions that while they received 60,000 applications thus far, only about 42,500 received decisions last week, as the rest missed the November 1st deadline. FSU admitted about 17,800 hoping to yield about 6,000.

The admission rate (based on the 42,500) is about 42%.

Saying they received 60,000 apps is true but a bit misleading, as it makes the school appear more selective than it actually is. Last year, UF admitted 37% of 38,600. Thoughts @Gator88NE?

@Gator88NE I messaged with FSU admissions on Twitter and when you add in spring, summer and pathways they have admitted about 23,000 so far. That comes directly from them. The 17,800 was only if you got the exact term you applied for. FSU is amazing on twitter. They are so responsive and answer all mesaages.

@flprepaidmom The schools manipulate the statistics so that it suits them best. They want to look as selective as possible for the rankings. I believe that the category where they want to look the most selective is fall admissions; so they are likely less selective for spring, summer and the alternate paths.

The only number reported for ratings such as USNWR is fall acceptances/fall admits. All those colleges with summer or spring acceptances are not counting those in the yield.

There are some legit reasons for having students start in the spring, such as dorm space, but most of the schools are just playing games.

My son did not apply to FSU. We all loved the campus, just not the fact that engineering isnt on campus/shared. I am surprised FSU doent beef up their engineering to draw more students in that field.

Our same situation. I didnt see your post before posting mine.

@DeanHeupel FSU/FAMU is trying to increase the engineering program, but it doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of funding as UF’s COE.

They have gotten increase funding over the last few years, and it’s a priority, but still not comparable to UF.
