How did our UF hopefuls do at FSU?

There is some weirdness going on with FSU’s reported numbers. Why would they get so many apps after the deadline date?

Your best bet is using the common data set info, as they have to follow a standard in reporting numbers:

https://ir.fsu.edu/commondataset.aspx

For 2018-2019 (last year):

Total first-time, first-year (freshman) who applied 50,314
Total first-time, first-year (freshman) who were admitted 18,504

Total first-time, first-year (freshman) who enrolled 6,324

First-time, first-year, (freshmen) students: Provide the number of degree-seeking, first-time, first-year students who applied, were admitted, and enrolled (full- or part-time) in Fall 2018. Include early decision, early action, and students who began studies during summer in this cohort. Applicants should include only those students who fulfilled the requirements for consideration for admission (i.e., who completed actionable applications) and who have been notified of one of the following actions: admission, nonadmission, placement on waiting list, or application withdrawn (by applicant or institution). Admitted applicants should include wait-listed students who were subsequently offered admission.

Note that early enroll students (Summer term) do count toward the CDS stats.

I would think FSU’s 62K doesn’t meet the above standard (in the past I saw them include transfer students), but we’ll know the “official” numbers late in the Fall (they can’t count students as “enrolled” until a month or so into the semester).

@newjerseysenior this is not true… They have always had 2 readers (at least the last 2 years I have asked about it) read each essay blind… they grade them and if there is a big difference they get a 3rd reader… this is not new and is not the reason for the extra time needed… system has not changed from that regard

@flprepaidmom what do you mean if you got the exact term you wanted… why would they count it like that? seems like a totally odd way to count it

@Gator88NE so which members are FSU using when they reference 61k and 17k acceptance? I am assuming its 17k total including summer… I’m guessing not Spring because they actually start at TCC… so its not an acceptance because you have to go to CC first and earn a certain GPA so its not guaranteed…where summer and fall are guarantees

@jhmoney the 17,800 are for those that got accepted for the semester they applied. So if they applied for summer and got summer I assume they are counted. The 23,000 is total accepted so far including fall, spring, summer and pathways. So if you applied for fall but got summer you wouldn’t be sounded in the 17,800

why would they only count if they got the semester they picked? how does that benefit any stats? but if you picked summer and got summer you re counted… honestly that doesn’t make any sense. just saying… I can see them only counting fall but not the other way… where did you see that? out of curiosity… but then again, I have no idea what I’m talking about usually… sooo you could be right lol

Daughter accepted to FSU, deferred from early to reg decision at UM, accepted to USF + honors college
GPA 3.8, 4.5 W
ACT 33
AICE Diploma, Science research program at HS, 6 yrs in Girl Scouts, some minor art awards

That’s what I said

I’m not sure, this is what I was told a couple of days ago

I’m sure we both have the same idea

@FLmom1226 what is the UF recalculated GPA… you mentioned Weighted… have you recalculated?

Son was accepted to FSU (Invited to apply to Honors Program and got the Freshman Scholarship)

  • 3.85/4 Unweighted and 4.98/6 Weighted
  • 4.4 Recalculated GPA (Concerning me for UF)
  • 1480 SAT (800M) / ACT 33 / SAT II Math 2 (770/800)
*He took the ACT again in December and scored a 35 (but it was too late for UF and some others :frowning: Oh well, but he used that score for some RD Apps that were due January 1st.
  • 9 APs (taking 4 this year, five of the others he got As in the classes and scored 5s on the tests). All classes are either Honors or AP
  • Attends Competative Magnet High School in Miami (Engineering and Robitics Program) - they do not rank but he is in the Top 15%). The highest weighted GPA in his class is a 5.6/6 and the kid is going to MIT. So I feel its hard to break the Top 10% unless you have a 5.0 or above which many do. His not being in the Top 10% concerns me for UF as well.
  • ECs are pretty good - active in several clubs in school, some leadership on campus, and is a math and physics tutor to underclassmen.
  • Volunteering with the same orgnization since freshman year and now holds the role of Volunteer President and Community liason. He works with special needs kids and advocates for inclusion and serves as a mentor to 5 teens with autism. About 400 hours to date and is going to continue volunteering until he leaves for college.
  • His essay was reveiwed by several teachers including his AP Lang/Comp and they all said it was great.
  • He has some Engineering related certifications including being Certified in AutoCad and Solidworks and has three REC Foundation Pre-Engineering industry certifications in Fundamentals of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering. (Not sure is that makes a huge difference on the application of not).

Background: He wants to study Aerospace Engineering. There are few programs at Florida public univerisities. UF is his #1 choice. He applied to FSU I think to mainly please his father and me as we are both FSU alums and met at FSU). We are die hards and he couldnt name an FSU or UF football player to save him life.

He has already been accepted to Purdue’s FYE Program with a great Merit award that brings the COA for OOS to half the cost and UCF Burnett Honors College with the Provost Scholarship (in addition to FL PP and Bright Futures.) He was deferred by Georgia Tech (but its looking like even if he gets accepted RD in March, he isnt leaning towards it mainly due to lack of merit and the cost, we shall see.)

I never thought I would see the day when I’d be anxious and hoping my son would get in and possibly attend UF. My husband and I are at peace. Haha.

I too wish FSU’s Engineering program was on the map in terms of rankings and funding. As far as it not being on campus, that doesnt bother him because he understands that the FAMU kids need access and its only 2 miles from the campus (heck its almost a mile from Westcott to Doak Campbell Stadium). They do have a good shuttle system for FSU’s Engineering school and after Freshman year, not many people live on campus anyway so they pick an apartment close to the shuttle route or drive themselves to the facility and dont have any parking issues. They also have all of those large labs and facilities that just wouldnt be able to fit on FSU’s campus even if they wanted to go on their own and have the Engineering program on the actual campus. Innovation Park just cant fit. If they had an Aero program my son would be seriously considering it.

Wow - sorry my post was so long. (Too much afternoon coffee). If my son knew I posted all this he would kill me. Good luck to everyone applying to UF. Is it Feb. 28th yet? Longest month ever…

@Beccanole72 Your son and mine have similar numbers, so I know what you are going through. It looks like he has some great options if he doesn’t get into UF.

Let us know what happens. And the month is not flying by… not even a little bit.

@jhmoney I don’t really know how FSU comes up with the numbers, they don’t define it. Using the CDS data is useful because it requires all schools to use a standard in coming up with applications, accepted and enrolled students (and from there, acceptance and yield rates).

FSU does accept Freshman and sophomore transfers, and I believe transfers are part of the 61K number. Transfers explain the lower numbers found in the CDS info (which only counts first time in college students).

@Gator88NE @jhmoney
This is from the FSU admissions reddit:

"6,000 students is how many we plan to enroll, not how many we admitted.

"We need to admit more than that, since we know not all admitted students will decide to attend.

"We offered admission to about 17,800 students last week.

“And while we have received over 60k applications so far, only about 42,500 of those received decisions last week. The rest missed our Nov 1 deadline for Jan 30 decision.”

They are saying that 17,500 kids sent their application in after the initial deadline, but they are including them in the 60,000. Who knows if any of the 17,500 have a shot or if they collectively just donated half a million to FSU.

@GatorDad305 How do 17,500 kids miss a deadline?

@Gator88NE doesn’t make much sense. You would think they would just close the application? Computers are amazing things.

I believe those extra 17,500 applications are being considered for RD, not EA.

I am thinking the resume might have slowed down some last second applicants? Not 17,500 though. Honestly…I think that number might be more reflective of students whose applications to FSU were either an afterthought or one that was hinging on later test scores…

@jhmoney I think the recalculated is either 4.37 or 4.39 I was confused about the Pre-Aice classes (if they get weighted 1 or .5) so I figured it out using .5 for them (like honors classes) so that was 4.37. She also is in a science program so she takes Experimental Science Honors as an elective every semester for that program but I wasn’t sure if they count bec they are electives in addition to her core science classes. When I counted them I got the 4.39
