@FLmom1226 preAice is honors so you did that right. As far as the science class goes not sure but if it’s a science I would say it counts. I think It’s a great shot combined with the test score. I guess it depends on her peers in her school and how they did comparatively
@jhmoney I think if anything puts her over the top it will be the 33 ACT. I think she is barely top 10% of her class & UF knows the science program she is in and she is not strong compared to most of the others. The strong students win multiple awards at regional & state science competitions. At this point we are actually heavily leaning towards USF & their honors college. She has ADHD, anxiety & is on the autism spectrum. I don’t think she will do well mentally in UF’s ultra competetive enviroment. At USF she will be somewhat sheltered in the smaller group of the honors college & get more advising/mentoring.
@FLmom1226, another Florida mom here - I agree USF sounds like a better fit for your daughter. UF just doesn’t seem to have as much of a personal touch - USF honors will give her a cohort of other students and additional support/opportunities.
As for how do kids miss deadlines, I think, at my high school where I work, some kids saw the second application date and were waiting to use S1 grades for a GPa boost. The admissions site lists two dates, which seems disingenuous for kids, especially first gens who may be navigating this process with little help.
@mom2boys1999 i agree kids who might not have parents who have gone through this before might be at a disadvantage like everything else in life. However if what you are saying is true about waiting for 1st half grades tells me they understand the process to some extent. Shame on the guidance counselors at the schools if they didn’t emphasize the dates. I’m sure the counselors did and the kids or parents did not attend those sessions. I know at my child’s school they told the kids if you are putting on your Halloween costume and have not applied to all your schools that’s a problem. The process is very complicated and I truly believe kids that do not have parental guidance or even a paid service to assist with the apps are at a disadvantage. There are so many things you can miss or forget to put down that are important on the apps… good luck to all. Would be great if everyone could get in. ?
Agree with these comments. The entire process is much different and more complicated than it was when most of us parents applied 25-30 years ago. If the parents don’t get involved, learn what is necessary and stay on top of their kids, something may be overlooked. Somewhat depends on the kid, some are all over it and some need more guidance. Cannot depend on the counselor to babysit several hundred kids either.
I just heard about a girl that didn’t get her SSAR in on time to both UF and FSU. She apparently thought that the counselor was going to send a transcript to them like what was done for the other OOS and private schools she applied to. She didn’t get into the EA school she applied to and may have to apply somewhere that has rolling admissions just to get accepted somewhere.
When my daughter and I toured FSU in October the guy running the info session was actually the VP of admissions. He said they would most likely admit no students who didn’t apply by the November deadline.
@Juliea344 I will let everyone know once we hear from FSU since we applied after November. It seems they would take into account the quality of students that apply and that there may be a reason they are applying late.
Yes, let us know! I would be very interested. Someone literally asked that question at the info session and he still said no. I did think it was odd that he would be so certain in his statements.
I called admissions today and they said that was not true. They said that kids that apply after nov 1 will be evaluated equally as the other kids but will
Receive decision on rolling basis
I have no idea what’s the actual truth or not the truth. All I know is what he said in October. He urged everyone in the room who was not yet finished with the app to get it done by November. A woman said “aren’t you unnecessarily eliminating potential students with great stats if you won’t consider their applications at a later date?” and he said “No, not really. We’re going to have too many applications by Nov 1st as it is”. His name was Mark Meleny. Interestingly enough he asked my daughter to email him on January 30th to schedule an accepted students tour. She did and we found out he retired!
It sounds to me as if he was encouraging kids to apply by the early date because there is no guarantee there will be space later.
@FLMom1226 - I am sure you already have this handled but make sure her diagnosises are on file with the USF Office of Disability Services so that she can get any accommodations she may need. My daughter attends a smaller state school and has some health issues along with a mild learning disability and she gets several useful and needed accomodations for both the medical condition and the learning disability. She is thriving at her school and is a junior now on the Deans List. Her advocate in the Student Accessibility office is awesome and is always looking out for her best interest. It gives me peace of mind. Again, I am sure you know this but maybe this can help another parent who has a student with either a special need or medical issue that will be attending a larger college/university. Along with a recent psycho-eduational evaluation and certain medical forms she is all set. Good luck to your daughter.
@rccoble Why don’t get you started on PaCE? We are trying to decide between FSU and PaCE. Have you heard many negatives?
My daughter applied on March 1st and got her decision on April 2nd. Accepted with OOS tuition waiver.
