For a harvard, yale, and princeton there is the option to submit two essays- good so that you cover all bases.
What to do for duke: one essay, one shot. Comedy or classic essay?

I’m not doubting your sense of humor or anything, but just make sure that if you are going to write a comedic essay that you are naturally funny. If you aren’t, it’s going to show. You can play up any topic, whether classic or comedic, as long as you use great detail and it is well written. You really can’t go wrong so just go with what you’re strong in.

“Classic.” My sense of humor is rather dry, and as much as I like that, I don’t think it would go over to well when written down. Might seem a tad bit too snarky.

Aren’t there three essays if you use the common App? One long, one about an activity, and the optional one about something fun, your "world’; or maybe research?

^It was definitely three for us pratt applicants- we don’t get the optional choice.
