How did you choose your major?

So this isn't exactly specific to UA, but there's always such good feedback on here! I've found that the thing that has been most troublesome to me in the college search process has not actually been selecting a school (thats easy - Alabama!), but selecting a major. I would say that in general I like to learn and have a bunch of different interests, so it's been really difficult - I've considered everything from marketing and business related things, to political science, to dance, to genetics, to telecom, and more. How did you select your major, and if you are out of college how important do you think that major has been to the success of your career? On a side note, part of way Alabama is so attractive to me is because it has so many majors.

Don't worry too much about choosing a final major just now (unless you're hoping for a dept scholarship).

When taking General Ed/Core Curriculum classes, many kids find that they become interested in a major that they had not considered before.

What subjects do you LIKE and you're strong in?

What kind of career do you see yourself doing?

BTW....sometimes an interest (such as dance) can be a minor, if you're concerned that it may not lead to a career.

What kind of career do you see yourself doing?

^^ This made me laugh because that is exactly my problem! There are plenty of majors that I think would be interesting, but then I can't imagine myself doing the corresponding job - but don't get me wrong it's great advise.

^^ I just emailed a prof from the dance departement last week to get some more info about their program (the dance website is the only one I've found on UA that is not particularly informing - nothing about what the basis of their program is) and possibly minoring, but it came back with a message that she is out of town until the 9th. When she gets back I will put the info in a dance thread for other CCers.

A random tip for anyone else in my situation - try to get exposure to as many major interests as possible. I recently shadowed at an interior design and architecture firm (something I really thought I wanted to do), and learned that it is not for me at all.
