How did you do it?

How did you get accepted to Duke?

same as any other college

 1. Work your a$$ off
 2. Be the right fit
 3. Luck

There are very few people who do 1 & 2 to the Duke standard, but even fewer who actually get in due to 3.

Honestly, the best way to find out is by reading through all of the decisions threads. It’s what I did when I was a freshmen in HS and it paid off.

Best of luck to anyone applying to Duke in the future, it’s only getting tougher so push yourselves.

I had the opportunity to spend an hour or two talking to an admissions officer this weekend during LSRW and Blue Devil Days. To him, the essays were by far the most important part of the application. If everything else is solid, a good essay will get you in.

I still have no clue.

haha but a good essay is the most subjective thing in the world

you cannot evaluate how good an essay is unless you’re an adcom or one of those ridiculously overpaid manhattan prep counselors

Just work hard and try because honestly there’s no logic to it. Don’t expect anything (acceptance or rejection)

That’s exactly the thing: you have to sell yourself as a package. Your numbers, ECs, recs, etc. set up a framework, and the essay fleshes you out. They will pick the people they like, the people they want. And remember, adcoms are usually comprised of recent grads, so these people are young and know what you’re going through.

I wrecked shop, but i got Penn. So, I left it
