I wrote about this last year on the parent’s forum and found wonderful stories. My question: Tell us the story (not your stats, that’s for another thread) of how you found out and your reaction to getting the Big envelope.

For my daughter:

I knew the acceptances/rejections were coming out that day. My daughter was up in her room. I went to get the mail and saw the big envelope with the YOUR IN!!! on it. I quickly hid the envelope, ran in the house and called my husband.

“Come home,” I whispered, “She got in.”

“She’s in…come home.”

My husband made the drive (including elevator ride) in five minutes. We stood menacingly at the bottom of the stairs. (The you are in so much trouble and we just found out place."

“Ellebud’s daughter,” I yelled menacingly, “Come down here!!!”

Daughter emerged from the bedroom with confusion and fear on her face. I wonder to this day what she really thought she was caught doing. The envelope was behind my back.

I brought the envelope out and screamed, “YOU WERE ACCEPTED!!!”

I believe that her feet touched one stair on the way down.

“I wonder to this day what she really thought she was caught doing” LOL

Me? Well, mine’s kinda funny. This happened just last week. On Sunday, my counselor delivered mail to students and my twin brother got a USC acceptance packet, while I didn’t. Needless to say I felt pretty bad and was sure that not having a packet delivered to me meant that in a few weeks I should be getting my rejection letter. But things got weird when we opened my brother’s acceptance packet: Despite the admission letter and all other documents in the packet having my brother’s name on them, the signed certificate that came in the packet had MY name written on it, not my brother’s. I wasn’t sure what was going on - who got accepted? My brother? Me? Did they mean to write my brother’s name but accidentally wrote mine? My counselor sent an email to the Dean of Admissions asking them what was up.

The next day, I’m in the shower and my brother knocks on the door telling me to get out, not telling me why. I assumed it was because he wanted to use it as I had been in the shower for ages. So I get out of the bathroom and I see my brother pointing at the computer screen. I check the screen and see an email open from USC - they apologized for their mistake and told us that not only did we both get in, but we BOTH got scholarships. I could NOT believe it. I was so shocked and excited. USC has been my dream school for ages. My parents were jumping up and down as they really wanted me to get into USC - they didn’t really care about the other unis that accepted me earlier, lol.

Also, one week later I finally got MY acceptance packet and it had a certificate with my brother’s name on it. I guess they got the certificates mixed up, hahaha. I’ve already sent in my deposit. I can’t wait to come to USC this fall!!

Two years ago I was new to college confidential and was browsing in late January and saw the talk about RSVPing for Explore and discovering the scholarship information. I logged into my daughter’s account and saw that she was up for a scholarship - she had no idea USC notified early and was not expecting an admission yet, let alone a scholarship. I ran out and bought USC hats for the whole family and hid them. The next day the package arrived. I put it aside until the whole family was home, then said casually “Oh, there’s some mail for you…” We gathered behind her with the USC hats on as she pulled out the folder. We started jumping up and down and cheering and popped a USC hat on her head. She went from stunned to crying to “how did you know???”

A fun memory. Here’s hoping this year’s college confidential USC applicants all have their own stories to post next year.

2 years ago you knew you were pretty much in if your status changed to “a decision has been made” in early March. That was the case with my daughter, although she had no idea I was checking it daily.

It so happened that weekend my daughter was out of town at another college interview so we decided to tour USC with our son (who has applied and is waiting!)

In anticipation I bought my daughter a USC sweatshirt while we were there.

Sure enough when we returned home the big envelope was in the mailbox.

I wrapped it in the USC sweatshirt.

We she got home we told her we bought her something at USC.

She looked at the sweatshirt and said “Yeah but I don’t even know if I’ll get in”

She lifted up the sweatshirt and the packet fell out and she stared at it in disbelief.

Laughter and tears all around…

Would love to do the same for my son this year!

Good luck to you all and let’s hear your stories when you get accepted:)

I love these stories!!! I can’t wait to hear more joy. (OH, we had the cd player rigged with the fight song. Didn’t work on cue…we have this remote gizmo. It needed new batteries.) Oh well…not a problem.

Two years ago S1 was in a robotics activity at school when I went out to check the mail. There was the packet saying youre in. I was so excited I called S1’s dad and brother and both came home. Meanwhile I went out and bought everything USC related I could find and decorated the outside of our house with all of it. I had USC footballs lying all over the lawn. Pennants hung from the house. We called him and told him to come home right away because there was an issue with his USC application. He cried when he got out of the car and we rushed out the front door of the house yelling You Got in to SC!!

S2 was denied acceptance last year. He appealed and got in as spring admit! He had been so depressed that he did not get accepted and he was sure his appeal would never work. I knew from CC that the appeals decisions would be announced by email. I logged onto his account and saw that he had been accepted as a spring admit! S2 was at an end of the year baseball party. I went to the store and bought window paint in cardinal and gold colors. And decorated the windows of his car with painted words like Your In and Fight ON on all the car windows. I called him out to his car. He looked really confused until I handed him a copy of the email. Then he started yelling with joy!

Those are great stories!! I wish I didn’t have such a ditsy one to share (as you’ll see–no USC-wear was involved!), but here goes.

2 years ago, before I had ever heard of cc, I was out one afternoon when the mail came. It was a Saturday in late January and everyone in our house believed S1 would hear back from colleges at the end of March. A large envelope from USC was in the stack of mail which my DH handed off to S1. He took one look at the return address (something like Office of Admissions and Financial Services) and figured it was a stack of FAFSA forms or something needing his dad to fill out. Does a busy teenager want to look at financial aid forms? That’s right. He didn’t open it.

Later, my H saw the unopened envelope sitting on the entry table and reminded S1 to open it.

They were both stunned into silence when it revealed the acceptance packet, complete with “Welcome to the Trojan Family!” on the front. Even more outrageous, he’d been accepted to SCA.

Me? I had my cell turned off and never got any of the astonished, thrilled, freaked messages they left for me until I came home hours later.

And then, dear friends, I got online immediately and found College Confidential, which answered all my questions about this early notice, discovering he most likely would be up for a scholarship, and the trick to find out which merit scholarship he was up for.

Then we were all in shock.

We still chuckle at how dense we were about the entire process! Sweet memories.

I had a pretty good inkling from the fact that a couple of the backdoor links worked. (I know, I know, bad person) But my last two decisions were rejections, so I figured I might as well not assume anything.

I got home from school today (spring break!), and as I walked in the door, I asked my mom if any mail had come for me. She’s ridiculously nervous about this whole week, cause she was accepted ED, so this whole acceptance/rejection/waitlist process is stressing her out. She said yeah, a big package from USC. I opened it up, and I quickly saw the front of the folder and said excitedly, “Welcome to the Trojan family!” Then I opened up the folder and started squealing and jumping up and down. Made my spring break already. :)

Adding this so some of you can read comments from last year. There were many similar stories on the USC Facebook page which the students initiated.
