I would like to know what aha! experiences you had that suddenly made you understand the “game” involved in taking the ACT and which thereafter dramatically helped you improve your score.

My son, who has gotten 36s on his ACT twice, is helping a junior at his school raise her score, which is currently 27. This person is ranked 3rd in a class of 400 and otherwise has Ivy League-quality credentials. She’s is incredibly smart, but apparently thus far has been working HARD rather than working SMART by finding shortcuts and back-door solutions.

My son obviously understands how to solve these questions, but is an unconventional thinker who doesn’t have the typical-student perspective that could help him target how to most successfully present this material. Perhaps those of you who started with low scores and eventually improved them sharply could prove that perspective?
