To those who’ve been to at least one of them:

I wanted to know the differences. I’m applying to both, but just wanted more information. Or just what the atmosphere is like, admissions, and kids, etc.

I would say the atmosphere would be different for starters NMH has pretty much no dress code and Asheville does have one.
Dazzelle (spell?) who posts here goes to Asheville and I think she applied to NMH as well - she’d be a good one to answer having been to both if I remember correctly.

My understanding is that Asheville (a wonderful school) is pretty conservative.

That would make it VERY VERY different from NMH - which is one of the most liberal schools anywhere.

I disagree; NMH isn’t so liberal.

^^That is totally untrue. Both of the conservative students at NMH are doing well there, I am told.

I don’t think of NMH as very liberal. Back in the day, the Northfield campus was know for being quite liberal and the Mt. Hermon campus was more conservative. Now that the school has consolidated to the Mt. Hermon campus, it seems much more conservative overall.

Maybe more conservative than before, but in a recent NMH Magazine, it was a HUGE deal that a young Republician group got to write an article and had even gotten some time at a school function to speak, or were involved in some other activity (or something, I can’t remember the details).

Laxtaxi - ROTFL!!

I’m wondering if everyone’s on the same page when defining liberal v conservative. political, spiritual, lifestyle, fiscally, all of the above, what?

All of the above in my opinion.

laxtaxi – while short, IMHO that post is in the running for post of the year.

Your opinion is not humble…

Thank you. Each time I hit “send” with some comment that’s meant to be lighthearted I wonder if someone will take me seriously and I have to explain myself.

Is that the only major differences? And NMH is quite bigger too…
I wondered if they had horse-back riding at NMH, since they said they had horses and a barn.

What is Kent like compared to these schools?

No horse back riding as far as I know at NMH. It is bigger for sure, which would certainly make for a somewhat different environment.
Academically, I beleive they are similar. Asheville would be a “top tier” school in many people’s opinion if it were located in New England.
I know that most (not sure exactly) rooms at Asheville are singles which isn’t the case at NMH.

Lax…while I disagree with your opinion, your post was both witty and amusing!

Keylyme, thanks for the compliment. Actually I suspect that there are more left-leaning students than right-leaning students but not to the point where one side is crowded out or otherwise unsafe to express a view. This school’s student body seems eclectic and tolerant.

In my son’s opinion,a junior , NMH is liberal , even for a European.
