How difficult is the ACT Science Section?

I’ve never taken the ACT before and do you need to know information about the scientific material beforehand?

No…all you need is to be able to read/interpret graphs and know proper scientific procedures.

Science section is acutally the easiest one in ACT (Reading is always hard…); you just have to interpret the data and other measured info. given.

Although ACT claims that outside scientific knowledge is not given, actually I disagree with the statement. I took AP Bio and AP Chem, and knowledges I gained from those classes helped some, if not considerable, questions on Science section.

Also you might want to train yourself to how to differentiate two conflicting reasons, because ACT Science has one set dedicating to conflicting viewpoints of scientists.

Okay thanks guys! I appreciate the advice, and I also took AP Bio and AP Chem so hopefully it helps :)

The Science section in and of itself is not very difficult. However, the time constraint put on it makes it difficult for many students. It is simply difficult to read, interpret, and analyze the charts and figures they throw at you (some of which seem bizarre) and answer questions about so many of them.

Mansu is right, you will sometimes encounter questions that require some background information. On the June ACT, there was a question about the equation for potential energy and the one I took before that had a question that required balancing chemical equations. I also had a fighting scientists passage about DNA and AP Bio helped me out with that one.

Hardest section on the test arguably. You need to use precise and accurate reasoning in a short time period.

All of the questions were easy, what made it hard for me was the harsh time constraint.

The time constraints and unfriendly make the Science Test really challenging. Pacing always improves with practice–the only problem is that ACT only provides 5 old exams in its book. What’s with that anyway?
