How do college classes taken during hs count towards GPA?

Son is taking precalc at the local cc this summer and will be taking calc there in the fall. He will be a senior. How will colleges calculate that into his GPA? How does that information get reported? By his hs counselor or by the cc?

Your S should ask his guidance counselor if/how the class will appear on his transcript and if it will count in his HS GPA-- the answer will vary from school to school. Similarly different college admission offices will handle the class/grade differently.

Unless it is a dual enrollment class that appears on his HS transcript, he will need to send the CC transcript with applications.

Short answer - it depends.

If the class is also being counted for HS graduation credit, then how the grade will appear of the HS transcript and how it is calculated into the GPA is a question for the GC.

If the class is not counted for HS credit, then colleges will just look at a HS GPA and the cc GPA separately.

For admissions, he will likely need to have the cc send a transcript (and almost surely will need to if the class is not on the HS transcript), but he needs to check the college requirements. If cost is not an issue, it’s better/easier to send the cc transcript anyway.

This may have no bearing on your son’s plans but summer college courses will impact his GPA for the purposes of law school admissions and this can surprise folks later on

Depends on the college you apply to. If the college defers to the high school, then it depends on the high school.

You need to report all college courses along with high school courses when applying to colleges, and send transcripts for all such courses when required.

College courses taken while in high school will count for graduate and professional school admission later.

Thanks @skieurope and @happy1 These are NOT being used as high school credit - he’ll be taking CS to fulfill his fourth year of hs math. The school is incredibly difficult to work with in taking outside classes. Son wanted a year of calc before college and school won’t accept the cc precalc so therefore he has to take both pre and calc at the cc. Should’ve just started him in Geometry freshman year (was in honors Algebra in 8th) but we weren’t in the know and almost everyone is advised to start freshman year with Algebra so… that put him in precalc for senior year.

So it sounds like the cc will need to send their transcript separately. We were hoping it would count towards his hs GPA as that is hovering at just above a 3.0 right now and he could’ve used a boost. Would having two separate GPAs be looked upon in the same way as if it were all rolled into his hs GPA?

Honestly it is impossible to say how admissions officers will look at it because things are done differently from school to school. Some colleges recalculate GPA using their own criteria, some look to the HS GPA. Either way the CC transcript will be seen and taken into account in some manner.

The one thing I’d say is don’t start second guessing decisions that you made years ago. I’m assuming you took the path that seemed to make sense at that time. It is impossible to predict how kids will grow, how their interests might change etc. over the years. Instead give yourself some credit for solving the problem and getting your S into calculus one way or another senior year.

If is is not on the high school transcript, it does not count in the HS GPA.

you will have to get a transcript from the community college for the colleges, your son is interested in applying to.

This can get very costly very quickly.

Find out from the college if you can get an official copy of the transcript from college to give to your GC. Find out if the GC can include a “certified copy, original on file” sign and school seal to send to the colleges (this may save you some $$).
