How do colleges check if you have done a sport or ECs

It’s unfortunate that some ppl lie or stretch the truth to make their applications more competitive. My question is, how do colleges find this out, and what are the consequences?

Likely due to the fact that varsity sports are used to satisfy the CA requirement of a 2nd year of PE, our local school logs them on your HS transcript.

They might talk to your GC - it is not uncommon for a school to phone the GC yo clarify various parts of the app, and something could come up then. They could Google - serious accomplishments can often be seen online. I wonder after the latest cheating scandal for college access if colleges might add a bit more “auditing” to their admissions process.

The GC rec and/or teachers’ recs may reference the important ECs. The higher in “impressiveness” an EC is, the more likely that it can be googled. Info not able to be googled may fall into the bucket of “meh” ECs.

While admission officers do occasionally call a GC to clear up anomolies, most applications do go unchecked. This is due to the sheer vast volume of apps colleges are now receiving. Where some applications probably do get away with embellishments, those who are caught often pay a high price such as all submitted applications being declared null & void. The current mindset is that this is enough of a deterrent.

ECs probably not. Sports too unless you are a recruited athlete. Just be aware that lying can be grounds for having your admission rescined.

No.

I can guarantee you those colleges did not accept you because of one year of lacrosse (that you didn’t even do yet). I doubt your sport even had an effect on your admittance at all considering, at the time of review, you had never even played a game for it. Congratulations on your acceptances, and there’s nothing to worry about.

Your theoretical future EC didn’t pan out. It happens.

Thanks! I was really worried. I got accepted into UCSD, and I was worried my acceptance would be revoked.

No problem.

I never did a sport in high school, so I decided to do lacrosse in my senior year. I put in my college application that I was going to do lacrosse, but three weeks ago I didn’t make the team. Now, I just got accepted to some colleges. I didn’t intentionally try to lie. Will my college acceptances be rescinded.
