How do colleges find out about good students without them applying to that school?

<p>Ok, kind of weird question. </p>

<p>A few years ago, my neighbor got a letter from a state school in Texas ( I think it was TTU) offering a full ride, and a free trip out to check out the campus. He turned it down(I would have gone just for the free trip, lol). </p>

<p>But I was wondering how they found out about him, he showed no interest, and lived in Ohio. He obviously was a very good student and now has a full-ride to a school in Ohio. He might have been a NMF, which I guess would have helped.</p>

<p>If you score in the top 99% on the PSAT[ NMF qualifing score] you can expect to get a lot of mail from colleges. The collegeboard will report high scores to colleges interested in attracting / recruiting top students, but only IF you check the box on the PSAT form allowing them to forward your scores .</p>

<p>I think CB sells lists of those who do well on PSATs and SATs to colleges.</p>
