I know that most colleges look at an applicant’s social media profiles but how do they find them? Do they simply type the applicant’s name onto a search engine and see what pops up?
Just for the record, I personally have not posted anything that I regret or would make colleges reject me. I’m simply curious.
That’s one way. Or search your name on Facebook, or google, “SLGorilla Twitter.”
No. most do not. There simply is not the time, even if they were so inclined.

But as noted above, FB is obviously the easiest since they can search by name. From there, the user may have left breadcrumbs that lead to other platforms.
At the end of the day though, while AO’s may not check your social media, your prospective employers more likely will. If you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see it, you probably should not post it.
