How do colleges get my address?

My high school junior has never requested info from colleges and has not taken the ACT, SAT or even the PSAT. The past 2 weeks we have been bombarded with written invitations regarding local info sessions for Yale, MIT, Wash St Louis and Illinois Wesleyan. He is a smart kid and is somehow they know this.

My high school senior was bombarded all last year with info from Tier 3 LAC’s (GPA appropriate) so somehow the access to our address is connected to the kids academic standings.

I don’t mind the information coming to us, I am just curious how they know GPA’s and home addresses.

Did he take APs? College Board actually sells contact info to colleges, which buy names according to scores. Or maybe your kid entered personal information on a college search web site?

I also think they get them when the students take the standardized tests like the PLAN test in their high schools.
