Any insight on when or the process by which colleges make admissions decisions? I know it may vary by school. But do schools review your file, make a decision, and move on to the next file? Or do they rank and wait until a week before announcing to make all decisions? Or two weeks before announcing decisions? Is it possible/likely that a school will have made admissions decisions 3 weeks before announcing?
My son was deferred from his top choice school. He emailed a Letter of Continued Interest in Dec and received an auto-reply that the email was received. Today, he sent an application update (NMF, 1st semester grades, etc.), and received an auto-reply that the email was received. A few hours later, he received another email stating that the Admissions Committee cannot see emails as part of one’s application file. Any updates need to be uploaded to the portal. He never received this response when he emailed his LOCI. So the concern is that they’ve already reviewed his file without the information provided in his LOCI (including the statement that the school was his top choice).
The dilemma was whether to combine the LOCI with the new updated letter and upload one document. The downside is that would appear as if he waited 4 months to send a LOCI…an indication that he wasn’t really that interested. Ultimately, he uploaded the LOCI with no modifications. He then uploaded the update letter that referenced the date of the original LOCI. It’ll be pretty confusing for the Admissions representative looking at the time/date stamps of the uploads but hopefully they can figure it out…assuming they haven’t already reviewed his file and moved on. Pretty frustrating.
My understanding is they may well still be adjusting their admit classes just days before the notification date, and weeks before might still be cranking files through the reading and committee process. So I personally would not worry about the timing you described.
What about having him type
Below please find my LOCI. I hope it’s not too late to submit it, as I ….(then explain what he did)
Then it’s all on one document and he gets a chance to explain what happened. Or he can email his admission counselor. Maybe both
@WeakestLink I think it depends on the school. My DD was deferred in early December from her ED. Instructions were provided that she could submit a LOCI before Feb 18. (Were any dates provided to your son?) She submitted a letter first week of Feb intentionally waiting. Our school advisor said many kids react emotionally and submit in December and lots happen in the next 2-3 months. AOs like more recent updates as they are less of a knee jerk emotional reaction but student has really thought about it and has more time to add any new updates in their loci. I think if your son submitted before the deadline with new info, that might help. My DD also directly wrote an email to the regional AO contact and he did reply with a nice note of confirmation. But I think it depends on the school. The college she was deferred from has a very low acceptance rate and class size is about 2500. For bigger schools, I would imagine AOs can’t reply back to every email.
