How do colleges react to. . .

How do colleges react to “change of heart” stories?

By this I mean something along the lines of “I performed poorly in part of high school because… but now…”

I am in this position in a way, and I have seen others on this board (transfers and freshman applicants) in roughly similar positions and was wondering how this fares in admissions (given that you have demonstrated improvement).

How harmful is a mediocre high school record (to the transfer admissions process) if you have really performed well in college, especially if you are applying for admission as a sophomore?

Any chance somebody from this background has transferred to UChicago? Any other information about this predicament relating to UChicago specifically?

how poorly are we talking? i had a 3.4 and thought that was poor. that includes an F

I went from a weighted 3.5 in HS (which was utterly horrible imo, I honestly don’t remember a single night of doing homework) to a 4.0 at my local community college. I had decent SAT’s and ACTs 1430 and 31 taking the SAT twice and the ACT once during my sophmore or junior year so the adcoms probably noticed that my HS performance was not due to me being a dumbass. I was rejected by U Chicago for 2007. I applied as a Junior and coming in as a sophmore, your chances are even slimmer. These days, a good GPA and good test scores aren’t enough to get you in at most of the better colleges. I have seen people with 3.5’s get into Chicago because they had exceptional stories/life experiences/talents/recommendations/essays to back them up.

Unless you’re at a community college, I’d just worry about doing well and pursuing your interests at the school that you are currently attending.

“how poorly are we talking? i had a 3.4 and thought that was poor. that includes an F”

My high school GPA wasn’t bad, about a 3.7 cum, but the classes weren’t very challenging and (my biggest concern) I decided to leave high school before my senior year to attend college due to a number of extenuating circumstances. My hopes were that attending college would allow me to prove my ability thus gaining admission as a transfer for my sophomore year.

btw, are you going to UChicago, renix?

Renix is headed to Brown, but I don’t know if he applied to Chicago. Renix, which schools did you apply to?
